I realized that even if I've been riding in the winter for quite a few years, I never actually took pictures of it. So I went for a little ride today up a mountain road. It was -10C outside my place, so I figured it was around -15-18C with the winds up the "pass". hehe
The bike did well, but going up a road with icy washboards without studs is a real pain haha, still not as bad as I expected it.
Enjoy.

Damn you people and your picturesque winter scenery! My commute's all grey sky and potholes.

No, I didn't, and it might be Iceland, and we do have buildings in Iowa, but still!

I'd say it looks like a scene off the route of the Tour of Flanders but that doesn't do justice to Iceland. Maybe one of the nicest pictures I've seen on BF. Traffic looks pretty light

I think one of the reasons we like this picture so much is because of the dream-like blur. Maybe caused by water on the camera lens, but it gives the viewer a sense of another world. This effect can also be caused by poor quality lenses, and the use of cheap cameras with similar quality glass, has been quite popular with artistic photography for awhile now. I mean, let's face it...the picture is of a dirt/muddy road, with nothing really of beauty in it. But a skilled artist knows just how to touch the soul of the viewer with characteristics that we wouldn't otherwise consider beautiful.

I'm pretty lucky, the path I ride is usually plowed but looking at all the pics with the snow I'm thinking of getting an old bike and doing the stud thing. Looks like fun riding.

Here's mine:
It's the green one in the foreground. Pic was taken a couple weeks back before it got cold here. Bike is an old 80's hard tail, repainted Kawasaki green by a nephew this fall. Panniers are plastic buckets from a grocery store deli (they had muffin mix in them), clipped on with hardware from MEC. You can see the silver reflective tape glowing from the flash on my camera phone. I have similar red reflective tape on the back sides.
I just added Schwalbe Ice Spikers over Christmas. Today we've had about 3 inches of snow so far, but we had a flash freeze last night, so there's some good ice underneath. Pretty steady riding so far!

Someday, there will be enough snow here for a photo of my winter bike doing winter things. So far, still using the summer bike with road slicks.

Same here, just no snow. The studs are mounted and it's ready to go! All this week I've riding on the road in 40 deg temps. Last year this time we had 2 feet of snow.
