I've seen this show several times. They are actual doctors and usually focus on medical issues. None of the shows I've seen have been sensational in the least. None of them have yet registered on my ******* scale.

Oops, let's try again...on my ass scale.

I just clicked on their site. The site makes it look like they focus on doom and gloom scenarios, but the six or seven shows I've seen have been about pretty ordinary health conditions.

2 are active cyclists, 1 of those cycle to and from work daily. 1 is an exercise expert.

Many emergency room doctors tend to focus on crash aftermath and react to stop people from doing whatever led up to the crash - including discouraging cycling.

Other whole-health doctors look at the big picture and understand that the health benefits of activities like cycling far outweigh the risks, even when commuting in moderate traffic. Cycling is one of those activities you can do your whole life, for sport, exercise, fun or utility. How many high school football stars are still playing football daily when in their 70s? Some in the medical field really "get" this.

I agree. If you cycle, find a doctor who cycles. If you run, find a doctor who runs. It decreases the chance the doctor will say "stop that!" whenever you get hurt.

Those streets look a lot more cycle-friendly than the ones I've been riding since I was 9 or so.

ER docs are a poor resource for most things; they never see the people that don't get hurt during an activity, nor do they see a significant number of the ones for whom the activity is fatal. Their experience is limited to the relatively narrow window of people who are hurt bad enough to go to the ER, but aren't already dead when the ambulance shows up.

Well after discussion with the producer, I agreed to discuss the issue on their show.

I have watched the show a few times also. It looks at various health issues and tries to educate others about what is going on. Never saw anything remotely disrespectfull. Five doctors that discuss things. Often with audience voluteers or people who are effected by the topic of that show.

She told me not all the hosts may agree, however I can accept that as long as they aren't calling me ignorant names and such. 2 of the doctor's cycle to work and 1 is largely into exercise. I mean realistically, I am not being paid to appear (which is ok) and I would like to discuss the benefits of cycling (especially in children). Although I am not expert as a parent there are certain things you have to be aware of obviously. Not all children are able and capable of riding at the same age and I accept that completely. My key point remains with the Chief though...if is not safe - why and how do we make it safe?

I am pushing forward with a Safe Routes to School Program and wrote the following letter to our local paper:

Dear Citizens,

Although the Chief has attempted to devalue my credibility, please be aware I care about our community and the safety of our children. For those who are unaware of my position, I am not ascertaining we place children in danger. Quite the opposite, my position is if it is not safe, let's make it safe! A fantastic place to begin in the Safe Routes to School Program. Cherokee Elementary School in Johnson City received a $250,000 grant to add sidewalks to local neighborhoods for children to have a safe commute to and from school. I propose we embrace such a program in our community for the safety and welfare of our children.

This program is not about eliminating the current transportation situation, it is about enhancing it. It is not about forcing children to ride/walk to school, it is about choice. We as Americans enjoy great freedoms and we as parents should be allowed to choose how our children commute to and from school. Alternatively, occasionally children miss the bus for various reasons. many parents have obligations and perhaps aren't able to transport their child to school. Are these parents guilty of substandard parenting because their children do not have a safe route to school? Of course not! The Safe Routes to School program is a grant program, meaning it does not cost our community to have the program.

In that so many of our children live in congregated areas, the relief to traffic around the school could also be greatly relieved by Safe Routes to School. One belief they hold true are walking school buses. This is where groups of children who live on the same route travel together for safety. The same is true for bicycle trains.

In conclusion citizens, I humbly request your support for such a program for not only the current student body but for the forth coming students who will attend Harold McCormick. Again, this is not about replacing the current transportation situation, this is about enhancing it. This begins with you citizens. If you would like more information regarding this program please visit the website located at https://www.saferoutesinfo.org/ or contact me directly at TennesseeDelight(at)aol.com.

Teresa, if you haven't sent this already, you should change this. "Ascertaining" is not the right word, it doesn't make sense here. It should be "suggesting" or something like that.

as·cer·tain   [as-er-teyn]
verb (used with object)
1.to find out definitely; learn with certainty or assurance; determine: to ascertain the facts.
2.Archaic . to make certain, clear, or definitely known.

agreed however letter is sent so I cant change it. Ok I'm definitely no Shakespeare lol

Anyhow, on the same (but different) vein I spoke with the mayor. We discussed the situation finally and perhaps can resolve this reasonably. One thing I did mention to the Mayor was the lack of respect for the helmet laws (yes I know this is a touchy point) regarding children specifically. I had been doing some research on this issue found many program like: https://www.prorider.com/ that offer low costs helmets to schools and organizations. I questioned to him that perhaps the local bike club might foot at least some of the initial cost. Anyhow I wanted to pass this information also also because someone else out there might find use of the information.

Helmets for kids is not as touchy as you think. Most want it to still be a parents choice, no mandatory helmet laws, but helmets actually do help protect the types of falls that many kids experience.

Tennessee has a helmet law that states children under the age of 12 must wear a helmet at all times, punishable by a misdemeanor offense to the parents. Although it is not strictly enforced, it is still the law.

I organized a helmet giveaway using Prorider helmets a few years ago, and it was very, very popular. You would probably be popular if you could put one together (especially in conjunction with the Safe Route to School program), and make it even harder for them to keep Cynthia from riding to school. PM if I can help with organizing your own helmet giveaway.

Thank you no motor, I might contact you because the mayor is in complete agreement I'm not entirely sure of different outlets available. That is something I have to check into.

Also, I spoke with the attorney and I am considering what he advised. If you want to know please pm me, I would rather state in pm then open forum post.

They're usually fairly healthy, though; selling his organs on the black market after you're done with him might cover the loss.

Thank you alaskan so very much, And an update to everything. The Doctor's all concurred the police overstepped their boundaries. The police have been taking a wide girth but I don't foresee that staying that way for long. It really feels like every direction I turn I am smashing into walls.
