Threaded to threadless adapter help.

Hey all,
I own a road bike with some weird specs, which make finding replacement components quite the challenge. After over a year of looking for any decent 60mm quill for 1 1/8 I decided its time to order a quill to threadless adapter & choose from dozens of threadless stems in my choice of color, so I bought this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/130836830122

While I'm no noob to cycle maintenance, I've only repaired my own bikes & never had occasion to work with a threadless headset... though I suppose in this instance the only real "threadless" component will be the stem.

I've been looking for info online without much luck & the only YouTube video I've found on the subject features some guy chucking the stem on the adapter without grease & repeating the phrase "I don't care!"

Anyway, there has to be someone (reasonable) who has info about this online. I wanna do this right. I'm confused about spacers; would they be necessary for this conversion? Are there certain spacers that would lend better to commuting via road bike? Is there anything I should know in general?

I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I suspect that you're overthinking it.

Think of the quill to threadless adapter as the shank portion of your threaded style stem and bolt it in place with it's wedge bolt. Then remove the top cap and clamp your threadless stem onto the top.

I agree with Grouch. I use seveal adaptors and I grease the quill portion and install like a normal stem. I Do Not grease the portion of the adaptor where the threadless goes, you don't want anything but metal on metal there.

I don't see any place to put spacers just slide the new stem over the adaptor and line it up with the top.

This might give you an idea of what it looks like, though I have a 1" to 1 1/8" adaptor, and I attach my bell to the adaptor.

Ah, so you have a *road* bike that used a 1 1/8" quill? Since that's a much more common configuration for mountain bikes in the megastem era I'm not surprised you're having trouble finding a 60mm 1 1/8" quill stem. Even if you did it would likely have a 25.4mm clamp diameter like this one, which may well be the most hideous stem I have ever seen.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/High-Quality...-/251219024121

If you can find an appropriate quill stem there are a few quality 25.4 road bar options. The Nitto B115 is nice and quite cheap.

If going threadless you just need an adapter that's appropriate to take the place of the quill stem used with the larger steerer, then install the appropriate 1 1/8" threadless stem on that. Looks like this one would work.

https://www.amazon.com/Origin8-Thread.../dp/B000XNZUKE

The other option of course is to go with a 1 1/8" threadless fork and headset but that would be more expensive and could mess with the handling and feel of the bike.

Spacers aren't necessary, but they can sometimes reduce the klunky appearance of the adapter

You can also use them to add a splash of matching or contrasting color.

I sometimes use a section of black hose on the 1" quill portion to bulk it up a bit and make the whole thing look more natural. If there is room dependingon the stem/adaptor fit I'll use a spacer to raise the stem both for looks and the little extra height.

Like so
