Vintage Peugeot, can anyone tell me the model and approximate value?

Hi, I am looking at this CL post: PEUGOT steel frame bike

I can't identify which model or era this is, so it's hard for me to determine if it's something worth looking at.

Thanks for any help!

It is a 50 or 52cm frame, more suited to riders 5'5" or less in height. Front wheel is not original as it is not a high flange hub, neither is RD.

If it needs work, like the disclosed brakes, ir likely needs a full overhaul of all bearings. An overhaul would cost $150-$200, so the bike is worth about $50-$75.

Thank you both for the info!

If it's that small of a frame it definitely wouldn't suit me. I get wildly different recommendations on the best bike size for me, I'm 5'9.5" so I was thinking a 54 to 56cm was best.

I'm 5'9" and ride a 54. Used to ride a 56 until I realized they were too big for me. Everyone is a little different. For your first bike getting it in the ballpark is more important than the exact fit, which you won't know right away.

I would keep searching for something better or at a higher price-point if your budget allows. Unfortunately for you the SF Bay Area is one of the most expensive used bike markets in North America.

I agree with you that I should look for something better. I was looking at this bike, the ad says it's a 55 but my friend said by eyeball he thought it looks more like a 58. 55 obviously is more my size, 58 for sure is too big.

This is a much better bike appearing to be in much better condition. I'd recommend it any day over the Peugeot. Price is probably reasonable in your area.

To my eye it looks like a 56-57 but the pictures are at strange angles. It would be worth taking for a test ride if anything.

I don't think it looks as big as 57cm, but definitely take it for a test ride. You won't know for sure what frame size is best for you until you do that -- there's a lot more to it than your height.

I am going to take it for a ride tonight! This would be my first road bike, so if the fit is not quite right in the early going I might be too inexperienced to know it. But thanks for your input, I do believe it's in the right ballpark and I'll see how it feels. FYI according to the '84 catalog the only sizes for this bike is either 55 or 58.

Quick Update: Decided to get the Fuji! Really seems to ride quite smoothly, and was obviously kept in great shape. I think I'm hooked!

Cool! Looks good. Just make sure, in the future, to always take bicycle pictures from the right side (drive-side) instead of the left side as shown above.
