Was that what he was asking?

Anyway, short story....
700c rims are 8mm smaller that 27in. Your brake pads will need to move down 4mm to reach the braking surface.

Why not use the wheels you had? Are they destroyed? I thought you were going to just get this thing back together.

I don't remember if I stated this in an earlier post but when my father had this bike, he rode down a hillside with thick exposed tree roots and hit a bunch of them. I checked when I took them off and they are completely bent up and unbalanced, as well as being rusted and many of the spokes are broken it's pretty much a lost cause.

I think I will end up going with a set of Sun CR-18's or some other inexpensive brand of pre-built wheels.

Buy the best hub you can afford, 14 ga stainless steel spokes, brass nipples and the CR-18s. You can move that wheelset to another frame down the line if you choose. That, or see if you can find a used 700c wheelset locally.

Well I meant a pre-built set of wheels using the CR-18's because I have no idea of where to begin building wheels from scratch. The reason being it's a skill that I'm sure I will never use again in my life and for this bike I'd really like to spend as little time and money on it as possible.

I can't believe I forgot this, but does anyone know what the rear hub spacing should be? I think I've found the perfect set of wheels for the right price if the hub spacing is what I need it to be.

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=263602_263622

As for the brakes, I'm still searching for some cost effective long reach center pulls.

Jesus Christ, I just read this whole thread and it makes me want to beat my forehead with a board or maybe a brick.

For the price of a set of wheels you can get a working Varsity off of Craigslist.

$100

working varsity

craigslist.

Done, end of story.

Or equip that one, after rattlecanning it, with Aerospokes or a Nexus or a $100-something CR-18 wheelset with Continential Gatorskins

or

get a working Varsity off Craigslist for $100.

Oh that's very kind of you sir. I apologize for being a newbie and a dreamer at times, but apparently it's not apparent to you that I've learned a bit since I started this thread. And I'm sure you skipped over the posts where I mentioned this bike has sentimental value to me.

The number of bike trolls on this forum surprises me. I had thought this was a friendly and helpful place but apparently it's not and I'm considering going else where because this is just too ridiculous. If you don't like what I'm doing why not just ignore my thread? I've tried to avoid you a**holes in the past but this is just too frequent.

Never mind the fact that those other pages are in the past and I've learned that this is not the ultimate end all be all bicycle but of course you people need someone to pick on I suppose. Also never mind the fact that instead of answering my question, you just keep suggesting I move on and stop with this project.

Let me be very clear. Unless I am cold and stiff, this project will be completed that is just how determined I am to do this. So any hopes of me giving up and letting this thread die are futile and you might as well stop now and be helpful instead of spiteful.

Edit: I forgot to mention, THANK YOU to those of you who have helped me. Rather than suggesting I stop working on this project, you found a more positive way to respond to this thread, and I appreciate it very much.

That's fine, I just couldn't help but notice you ignored almost all of the advice people gave you, starting with "keep it simple" to "don't paint it" all the way up until today.

I'm sorry if I seemed rude, but I find it equally insulting that you would treat most of the terrific advice delivered here so.

Banjo, don't bother arguing the point; the thread had to arrive at this point sooner or later.

At least we have a great "Don't let this happen to you!" thread example for the next fellow who tries to kit out a Varsity with Cervelo parts.

And what advice would that be? I pretty much took everyone's advice that gave advice towards me actually doing the project compared to those who told me to stop because apparently it's hurting them in some way or something.

If you would like I could list and thank those who gave advice that I used.

I would like to thank:

Helped with identifying the year my Varsity was made.

And I would like to thank each and every one of you for the help and advice you've offered. I really do appreciate it and I will have the pictures to prove it when I have the bike completed.

I'm not really sure how else I'm supposed to prove that I used people's advice? I mean there have been seven pages worth of good information that I have used, while silently I still used this advice and now have thanked these people. I don't know what more you want from me. Or did you want me to thank you as well for recommending I stop working on this project and buy a fixed up Schwinn?

Let me also fill you in on some information. At the time, besides having hypothetical dreams about what I would put on my Varsity, I was pressed for time. The computer I was using at the time was not mine it was actually my schools. I was pressed for time whilst doing other things; Situations have changed now so I now actually have time to think about my posts and actually thank people rather than take your advice silently, use it and post with the results as I did. Not to mention the fact that I did say I appreciated all the advice I was getting in an earlier post. Which makes me wonder if you, banjo_mole actually read the entire thread before posting what you did.

I just love how I got this project going again and immediately someone comes along, half-arsedly reads the thread paying attention to things that with time are now invalid and makes some post that caused me to waste even more time posting on the forum rather than working on the project itself.

Now if we can stop all this nonsense, I'd like to get back to posting things actually pertaining to my project and not politics.

It seems like more time was spent posting in this thread with hairbrained seat locks and buzzers and workarounds than actually working on the bike. If you had just said "here's what I inherited, what do I need to do to get it running again", you could have had the bike back on the road in under a month.

Was my above rant not clear enough?

From now on anyone who posts anything along the lines of "you're polishing a turd" or "just buy a $100 schwinn off of craigslist" (in this thread of course) automatically makes my ignore list. If you decide to change your mind and help out, too bad.

So that's the way it is around here isn't it? I try and thank everyone for the advice they've given instead of work on the bike for the time being and it attracts the scum of the forum who derail my project even further, but if I take the suggestions of others, spend more time outside working on the bike than answering posts on the computer and ignore everyone including naysayers, people post that I'm an unappreciative prick for not listening to those who have told me to stop.

Fine then, you tell me what to do and I'll do it. Happy? Because apparently whatever I do to try and receive help and get my project completed somehow inconveniences everyone else in the world.

Okay everyone, take a breath.

Thanks to everyone that helped out in this thread, there are a lot of people on here that know their stuff and truly want to help someone out by getting the best for their money. Oren, I'm hoping that all goes well with you and this very special bike. Its value can mean more than just a dollar amount and that holds true for a lot of things - such as the word of a wise person.

This thread has run its course. And on that note, I'm closing it.
