It was a good article and just read her follow up a few days ago. It is nice to see that a few companies are trying to give the world a few new 3 speeds to choose from.

I will still stick with the vintage ones.

The Tokheim drive was introduced in the 1970's and gives a 12-34 ratio over 5 steps... we can put this in the failed technology category as it was much easier to fit a wide range 5 speed block and a conventional derailleur. By this time Suntour was offering their GT derailleurs at all price levels which shifted better and were much quieter in their operation.

1962 Glider Update
Things are progressing well.
Cleaned, re-packed, new cables etc.
Just missing a front caliper. I actually have one but the bolt is too
short for the front. I can pick one up this weekend.


The young woman who it's intended for is coming by on Saturday to have a look.

Hey Sixty Fiver and other Twenty owners... what bike rack works with the Twenties? My husband says he isn't happy with ours and wants to think about getting a new one. We have a 2" on our Rav-4 which is what we usually use when hauling bikes. Other bikes are a ladies Sports, a ladies DL-1 that might get put together some day, a ladies Schwinn Sierra Hybrid, a massive men's Specialized Expedition. We could use some versatility in a rack!

So another bicycle thought today... our friend is proceeding along with the reconstruction of my Raleigh Sports. The new Ivory paint is looking so nice with the new gray cables and honey saddle that I hate to clutter it up with an excess of pin stripes and decals. Thinking of just putting back on the head badge, maybe a "Raleigh" on the lower tube and the "made in England" on the upper tube. Debating about one of the Raleigh stickers on the seat tube, it originally had the rectangles, not the heron. Maybe avoiding the pinstriping altogether. And no other steel type or fender decals. I think cutting down on the decals would make it look very modern and "lovely". Getting new alloy wheels and cream tires too. Maybe some cool racks at a future date. And a Lion bell from England???

Anyway I digress...I was thinking about decals today. Anyone agree....or want to talk me down from the bridge?

The best part of a total rebuild like you're doing is the ability of personalizing to suit your tastes. I would go with what your eye tells you would look best.
Another thing is decals for the more common bikes are hard to come by. Good ones at least. I had to make my own Rudge Sports downtube and Rudge-Whitworth chain guard decals because nothing I found was anything close to good quality.

IMO... Raleigh had some very elegant and straight forward decals for their models. I would put the decals at the least and leave off the pin striping if you wished.

Sure, here ya go. I made this using a photo of noglider's Rudge. My Rudge is painted over, but I can still see the decal underneath, so I was able to size it correctly. In this zip file you will find the 300 dpi image in both TIFF and JPEG format. I didn't vectorize because I'm a PhotoShop, bitmap guy. It prints fine at 300 dpi in bitmap. Here's a small image of noglider's rudge against my rendition and a link to the zip file.

I'm very impressed that you make your own decals. I tried making some (for a film prop) and they didn't turn out very well... What brand of transfer paper do you use?

My Rudge project got sidetracked by other bike projects this summer. Plus I blew my bike budget on a 69 Sprite that I just NEEDED to have. So, I haven't even stripped the paint off the Rudge yet. In the old days, I used an inkjet printer and the varnish transfer method for graphics on my wooden projects. When I went online to find duplex paper, I found that it is no longer being manufactured. I figured I'd have to use waterslide paper for my Rudge. I turned to the message boards and found custom guitar makers that had beautiful waterslide decals on their guitars. According to them, inklet printers can be problematic for waterslides and they all recommended laser printers with special waterslide paper meant for laser printers. There's a graphics place in town that would print the decals for me, but my Rudge project will have to wait till next summer. So that's the story. If the Rudge decals turn out to be half as good as the ones I saw on the guitars, I'll be very happy, but I haven't tried them yet

Yet Another 3 Speed!
Picked this one up the other day for $50.00.

1971 Eaton's Glider.
Not sure what I'm going to to with it.
The Good
-Tall frame/good paint
-rims and hubs
-brake calipers
-trigger
-new chain
-seat ok.

The Bad
-tires are shot/new tubes
-crank arm/chain ring bent
-pedals
-low end brake levers
-no fenders

For the time being, I've put a somewhat rare Torpedo Duomatic Kickback hub on it just to check it out.
