Removing Braze-on Stem Shifters
Can I use a bell designed for a tapped stem (Peugeot Super Sport Mixte) to cover the ugliness or do I have to bite the bullet and get a new stem (and brake levers, and derailleurs, and DT shifters, and fenders, and rack, and bars and and and and...)?
$20 bike is not going to be a cheap one. I've already spent $53 and counting...

It's raining and my garage is too dark for anything decent. I'll try and take some tomorrow. There is a bit that sticks out that's threaded (sorry, bad description). I was hoping I could cover it up, though I think I'll have to get a new stem. Or at least some prettier Stem shifters.

Any chance that it's actually clamped on, or held on with the top nut of the headset?

Unfortunately, no. I've taken one off entirely and I'm left with a stem with a big ugly knobby thing. It's not even the same colour as the rest! But seems to be threaded right though to the inside of the stem, so I think I'm toast.

Can't you just put a washer and bolt on it and be done with it, or am I missing something? Why take the bell off? I probably should not be asking these questions.

Some older Peugeot models actually had shifter mounts cast into the stem. It's all one piece of alloy, stem and mounts.

I don't think so - I think it's for me. I wouldn't be spending so much money on a flip!! Though don't mixtes go for hot money in TO? I don't have a mixte, and I feel that I need it to round out my bike "collection" (hardly a collection with only 4 bikes)
This is definitely how it is.

Maybe, but it's kind of moot now as my neighbour just bought it from me to make it into a fixie lookalike for his girlfriend (single speed coaster brake, rattlecan job).
I am getting a maroon Nishiki mixte from a bike buddy of mine.
