Interesting anti-theft device
my friend has an old diamond framed cruiser/single speed thing.. I noticed this theft prevention device built into the fork crown! it works in conjunction with a metal tab on the headtube to make it difficult to steer the bike, kinda like "the club".. crazy to see a key hole in the side of a fork

Fork locks weren't all that uncommon back in the 50s and earlier. Schwinn made them too, and a bunch of others.
Not so good for preventing theft these days, but it will keep somebody from riding it away.

I like this hack using an old chain to secure your saddle:

Problem with fork locks is if you lose your key.
Back in the day my friend had one, lost the key and hd to punch out the lock cylinder.

That is on an old British bike not a cruiser. I have the same lock on my 1972 Raleigh Superbe. They can be locked in several different positions. If you look under the fork tab you will see 3 holes for the striker to go into.

Your friend's bike could use a waxing with Meguiars scratch x. The metal parts can be cleaned with aluminim foil and a bit of motor oil.

That was a kinder, gentler age.

Won't get too far that way. FWIW I use the fork lock in conjunction with a cable or U-lock. It also comes down to what is nearby and easier to steal.
