Patience, Grasshopper

Some better photos will be needed. Closeups of the lug work, seat stay caps, brake bridge, fork crown. What is the threading. The photos provided are not adequate for anyone to venture a guess. The loops under the crank are not unusual, but do seem rather crude compared to what one unusually sees for cable guides.

From what I have read, these bikes where produced by Marinoni for a bike shop named George Vettor Cycle & Sport in Guelph Ontario.

I just updated an 80's vintage Marinoni with STI shifters and lower gearing for a lady who is going to tour in Europe. The bike I worked on had Campy dropouts, Columbus SL tubing, great paint and immaculate lugwork. The original gruppo was C-Record. So basically a top-end bike. No offense, but I think the bike you have here may still be a Marinoni, but a few levels down in the food chain.

Those look like rollers from chains. More than a few builders used those as cable guides in various locations. Cheap and plentiful.

Those are from Cinelli, and cost real money.

Chain rollers are free, if you salvage them from a worn out chain in the trash.

Your mystery bike appears to be Japanese. Tange fork, Shimano dropouts, lug treatment and seat cluster are all telling me this.

Sorry to bring this back, but It's been bugging to know
no one as seen this kind of serial number FU02645
I know for a fact that is been painted by Marinoni because of the decal and someone recently told me that they repaint only good bike.

thanks

It's dfinitely not a Marinoni. The serial number is similar to Fuji's but not the same. However, it does appear to be a 1981 Japanese manufactured frame. I suspect it orignally had a plastic bottom bracket router and when this was lost, those loops were added.

Nice saddle, it needs some leather care.
The style of seat stay top "caps" or eyes is of the cut and fold type, indicating production, other details such as the lack of stress relief at the base of the seat lug slot are in keeping with this.
Not knocking the bike, just it is going to be a challenge to figure out its pedigree.
The loops at the bottom bracket and the placement of the frame number suggest to me that the frame originally had some type of over the top of the bottom bracket shell shift cable routing.
Drain port drill hole and cable loops done probably just prior to respray.

yeah I have seen cable guides like that on a 'noni before so they may have added it at the time. This bike was probably repainted in the late 1980s or early 90s and either by Marinoni or someone got crafty with decals. Maybe they scored them from the shop who's house brand it was? I dunno. It definitely is odd to see that decal on a japanese production frame like this that has been resprayed.. It's going to be really hard to figure out what his is. In time if you keep a learning the rope of vintage bike you might run across this serial number format and figure it out, but I think you should get comfortable with the idea that you may never know.

Why would a reputaable builder and refinisher rebrand a frame? If Marinoni only repaints "good bikes" why would they rebrand them and tak away their idenity?

And this has been correlated by who?

If one decal maker can produce a logo with one font, another can do just the same.

Because there were not his frame, if you check Victory decal, It's the same as Marinoni but different name. I think it was made that way to let you know they repainted it.

So if I sent my '63 Frejus or 69 Cenilli to Marinoni to be repainted, at a cost od $400=500 it would come back with Victory decals?

They don't repaint anymore ( I think) and if you don't want that, you just don't go there

They do and they don't. The official policy is that they don't repaint anything other than Marinoni. However, if you're an old and respected customer there's a different policy. In the past Marinoni was never shy about repainting frames and putting his decals on them. However, I never realized that he had specific "Victory' decals for repaints.
