Shimano 600 Arabesque crank compatibility?

OK, so buddy has an awesome set of Shimano 600 Arabesque cranks. He just bought a new bike with 2300 brake/shifters and really wants to use the vintage cranks.

If we upgrade the chainrings to current ramped/pinned versions (Shimano 105), will the crank arm spacing play nice with the modern shifters?

Could work.
Measure the distance between chainrings on the 600 cranks vs the 105.
Check chainline using this BB: you can swap the cranks and measure chainline before you order new chainrings.
If the chainline is not correct, you might be able to make it correct installing a different BB...

It should work fine. The thickness of the spider at the chainring is the same for all Shimano. The closer spacing for 9-10 speed is all in the rings. I run a Arabesque crank with dura ace 9 speed with the 9 speed rings & chain and it works great. 600 crank calls for 113mm and 2300 calls for 110. both are square. Just try it and check the chain line. As long as it clears it should be fine.

Okay, so I have been searching through old threads trying to come up with an answer that I feel is pretty basic but since I am new at modification is it well beyond my pay grade. And, since it's crank change-out related, I feel it is only a minor thread-jack.

I have a mid 80's Schwinn Super Sport with a 52/4X set up. (42 I think but don't really remember. I know this setup is not original because original equipment for this was biopace rings which are not on this one.) I want to move to something more Super Clyde friendly--a small ring in the 30's maybe? (I would put a MTB crank on this thing if I wasn't afraid of the shame and ridicule I would endure. I may have very little, but I do have SOME pride.)

So, question 1: How do I determine what type of BB I have presently? The answer to #1 will logically lead to question 2: How do I take that information and figure out what more modern compact, clyde friendly crank set up will work with minimal part swappage? The more basic the explanation the better. I could not find any "crank change 101" thread anywhere. (I have searched pretty extensively. The only threads I could find were showing off completed projects.)

I'm also thinking bar end shifters and more cogs in the back are in the future but they are not as pressing at this point.

Just to try to head off one potential question, I really don't want to find a more modern bike that already has a more clyde friendly setup. I really like this bike. The frame is just 'roadie' enough to make a good difference from my hybrid and I REALLY like the red/black paint scheme. It goes with my high school and favorite college colors.

Just to head off one more potential comment--yes, I know the best alternative is to HTFU and since I live in Dallas and don't really have any hills to climb I should not have to worry about smaller rings

</thread-jack>

^ DTSCDS:

First, to get more useful answers, you'll need to provide specifics, what model crank is currently on there now? BB spindle length is crank model specific. Photos of the cranks would also help out. You might have a Shimano model, or Sakae SX crank on there based on what was usually offered in 86 from Schwinn. A good chance these are 130mm BCD. Smallest inner chainring size is 38t.
The BB spindle were around 113mm. But measuring with a caliper is the best way. With this measurement, you can compare BB spindle requirements of current compact doubles on the market.

See, now you understand what I'm up against. I didn't even know enough to include the most basic information. The crank arms are Shimano 600. But, since I am fairly sure the rings have been changed (the catalog I found online says Biopace were standard--these are not) I don't know what other modifications may have already been done.
I can do brake/derailleur adjustments and change tires/tubes but when it comes to serious mechanic work I am a complete Newb. If someone asks me why type of cranks I have my answer would be "silver".
I have a caliper so I can measure the spindle length. I will take photos and include them tomorrow. Stay tuned. . .

Also, an nettiquet question: Should I move this to the "Mechanics" forum. At the least, should I start a new thread here to avoid further hijacking of this thread?

DTSCDS; you may also want to consider a modern external bearing crankset, they're very easy to install and are available in compact crank size which would give you a 50/34 chainring.

I don't really care what type of crankset I run. (Although, these are really pretty!) I'm just afraid of getting in over my head and wasting money/time.

Posting a new thread either in the Mechanics or C&V won't hurt, as it'll allow all to keep track of specific modifications you're wishing for.

My suggestion is to search through the Schwinn catalogs available online, narrow down to your model and year. A parts list is in the catalog....and you've already know it came with Biopace rings. It should state the Shimano model (600) and possibly the BB model too. Then you will be able to determine the BB spindle length w/o pulling the cranks and measuring.
I bet it'll be 113mm JIS.
Most modern square tapered double cranks use a 110mm spindle. You should be able to get away with using the existing BB.
