Tall Stemmed Tempo

Yesterday found me stripping my wife's/son's 76 Super Course MKII for parts. The 20" SC is now way too small for my son and my wife has never ridden it.

I removed the Suntour Accushift 7 speed barcons, the Shimano 14/34 6 speed Mega-Range freewheel and the Suntour AR 4400 rear derailleur. I also added a tall Sunlite stem. I don't know if it is as good looking as a Technomic but it costs half as much.

I tried to use a Vx-GT rear derailleur but I could not get it to index. Strangely, the AR 4400 indexes pretty well though it skips a shift part way through its clicks. I may get a 7 speed Mega-Range in the near future to see if it will index 7 gears. I still need to add the handlebar tape. You may see some Eggplant Newbaum's tape in the background of one of the pictures.

The hubs are Dura-Ace, the rims Campagnolo Victory and the tires are Continental Sprinter tubulars. The pedals are Suntour Sprint.

The clamp will take a bit oif getting used to but I like that style much better than the Technomic.

Oh, for some reason, I'd been thinking that stem opened more in the front than on top. Guess I hadn't looked that closely in the past.

The top clamp does make it very easy to mount handlebars. They could even be mounted/unmounted with levers and barends installed.

This Tempo is cosmetically challenged. It has a lot of scratches and some surface rust. It is very sound structurally. Right now I am going with the patina. It may be a candidate for powder coating in the future. I think it could really look great in gloss black with a white Velocal Tempo decal set.

I have put on new handlebar tape. I will put up some pics of that soon. A ride report will be upcoming soon also.

On Sunday morning I was able to take the Tempo for a nice ride on Austin's Veloway between thunderstorms. I topped off the Continental Sprinter tubulars to about 110lbs/psi. This delivered a very nice smooth ride. Everything worked just as it should with the Suntour Accushift Barcons indexing very well with the Suntour AR 4400 RD. The steering is responsive but not twitchy and the Tempo tracked very well through all turns flat and cambered.

I was extremely pleased with the height and placement of the handlebars which allowed me to easily ride with my hands on the hoods. The single pivot Dia Compe sidepulls stopped effectively from all speeds. I have not yet tested them on a long descent yet.

I think I am going to return my 86 Peloton to drop bars and bar ends with a Technomic stem.

Below are some pics of the Newbaum bar tape in Eggplant.

vonfilm, I like to get some idea how tall that stem is, could you measure from the top of the lock nut on the headset to the top of the bars at the clamp. Thanks!
