    Yesterday was my first ride this year

    im a Clyde (6'1" 285 lbs) and live in a very hilly area. i did 8 miles yesterday (my first ride of the year), the last two of which were mostly uphill. not a 20 percent grade, but just a 3 or 4 percent, steady grind. made me realize i have the strength, but not the wind. im wondering if i should ride every day, every other day, etc? i want to take this weight off, but dont want to hurt or kill myself!! any help is appreciated.

    you should ride every chance you get. even if its only 5 miles or less.

    4 % is actually a good tough grade. Remeber, half the stuff you read on the forums is BS. 15 mile 20% grades!

    I say ride everyday if you can. On days you feel good, lift the pace a LITTLE bit. But make use you have enough gas to make it. On days you don't feel so good, just make it even if you have to crawl. It's the effort that makes you stronger, not the clock.

    On a day you don't have it, turn back home. But I bet once you get home you say,"I still feel good, I bet I could have made it". Then the next time you feel that way, you will do it knowing what you know!

    On a few occasions I must really convince myself to ride, and every time, after a mile, I feel totally good to go, not always full power, but feel good to complete a designated route.

    Every day if possible. Even think about it when you can not, it helps.

    When I was traveling for work, I would think about it, then I started to take a bike with me, (with front wheel remove it fit in bed of truck under hard tonneau cover.

    Hills are good, unfortunately, since you are going down hill half the time you should consider riding twice the distance

    me personally and i am new to cycling...

    i did 22 miles today... i will take 2 - 3 days off...

    but i still ride every day...

    might just cruise around... might go find some town hills to climb... might do some sprint stuff...

    but i still get 10+ miles every day that way... and even though i did 22 today... I'll still go ride again tonight, maybe run my dog and go on another ride after that......

    One word... headwinds! I am finding that on the same route, I can average 12-13 or 16-17 all depending on how strong a headwind I'm fighting. I have a sneaky feeling those headwinds are "more responsible" for getting me into some vague semblance of shape than the uphills. Only pisser is to get those headwinds coming back... prefer them going out!

    I try to ride every other day. When I ride I always push myself, I never just roll along. So I feel the rest day is good for me. My first ride of the season was about 8 miles (took a break too) and now well into the season I can do 60 miles with no problem at all. I only have 8lbs left to lose to exit Clydeville.

    Anyway, do what works for you.

    If you enjoy it, go for a ride whenever you can. I always feel better during a ride, even if it starts slow and cranky. It's good for the body and good for the mind, once I get up into the hills away from the city. Sometimes it takes a few miles to get going.
