My husband and I are looking to buy a new car. We test drove and loved the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. It is the next best thing to cornering on a carbon fiber bike!

So far we've been breaking down our bikes and laying them flat inside his spacious Mazda 3 hatchback with the rear seats folded down. FYI: hatchbacks work really well - we can fit 2 bikes, numerous bags for bottles, shoes and helmets as well as luggage for trips to go on tours.

The Hyundai dealer claims he can put a hitch on the car but will that really hold up the bikes? This is what the car looks like: https://www.hyundaiusa.com/vehicles/2012/genesis-coupe/

Does it look like it would securely hold a bike rack on the back? If so, what kind of bike rack? It would be for 2 bikes.

A part of me likes being able to keep my bike protected from traffic, the rain and unsavory individuals. So I'm torn about putting them on a rack. This is San Francisco after all. Couldn't somebody steal them? Is there a secure bike rack from theft? Or instead is there a car with a really spacious interior or cargo space perfect for bikes?

If you have answers to any of these questions we'd greatly appreciate it!

Wife had a hitch on her Neon. Saris Bat rack. Rack bolted on to frame. Bolt that attaches plug into hitch has threads and a hole at the end so I use a small padlock to secure.

As far as stealing the bikes. When we go inside anywhere (eat etc), I make sure I can see the bikes. I do place a bolt through the frames and a cable that attaches to a loop on the frame.

I also use a bungy cord to hold the hb's still during travel. I easily installed the hitch within 15 minutes, paid $60 some years back at U Haul. A hitch shop wanted $250 for the hitch alone.. They claimed my bikes would fall of any other hitch. 3 bike rack and hasn't even come close to losing a bike off the rack since 2003 (?).

Hotels, bikes go inside on travel and I wouldn't leave them outside. Never had a problem with the bikes getting dirty but her in SoCal, we don't deal with rain much. But they'd get wet on a roof rack too.

How thick is the metal on the car?

I had a trunk mount bike rack which worked great on my Taurus. But when the Taurus got sold and replaced with a Mitsubishi Mirage, the rack was useless. Why? The metal on the trunk of the Mitsubishi was so thin that the trunk buckled at any attempt to cinch down the tightening straps. This can't be coincidence. The Mitusbishi Zero airplane was a renown fighter, in part because Mitsubishi engineers figured out how to make the plane lighter by making the body panels so thin.

A hitch mount doesn't touch the metal of the car, it bolts onto the frame. So this would not be a concern related to the OP.

You have a receiving part that goes on the car, in 2 square sizes,
the larger a better choice If a small cargo trailer is considered.

NB, I note that is what lots of Europeans do, buy a trailer,
rather than a Big pickup truck,
to haul stuff that wont go in or on their compact cars..

Didn't see big tire monster truck lift kits there either..

I just put a hitch on my wife's new Fiat 500. Holds 3 bikes no problem. I ahve a hitch on my Scion Xb. With the hitch rack and my Thule roof rack, I can carry 8 bikes. If these two small (the Fiat is really small) cars can safely carry bikes on a hitch mount rack, the Genesis will have no trouble. BTW, I order the hitches for all my cars from etrailer.com- good prices and very good installation instructions. I have ordered 3 from them so far, and they have never taken me more than 1/2 an hour to install. The hitch rack can be locked to the hitch, and the bikes can be locked to the rack.

Thank you so much!!! Sounds like it's definitely possible. I appreciate the tips on how to secure the bikes on a bike rack. If you have them, I think they're useful to anyone reading this thread.

We're also considering cars with fold down rear seats to see whether we can still fit the bikes inside if we get a sedan but not quite SUV sized car. We're thinking kids might be in our future too, another consideration for not getting such a sporty car. Anyone have recommendations for very bike friendly cars?

I put a hitch on my caravan a few weeks ago and also got it from etrailer.com which was linked above. You can install it yourself but my installation was as simple as holding the hitch to the frame of the car and screwing it in. The hitch for the genesis seems like a pain to install and isn't a simple job.

Also look at the Thule and Yakima sites to see which type of carriers are available for you cars. I prefer roof racks so I don't have to worry about someone rear ending my bikes or backing my bikes into a pole. But I always need to remember that I have bikes on top of the car.

We use a Hollywood brand hitch rack on our Mazda 3 and it works well. You dont even notice the bikes are back there until you look in the mirror. It holds them very secure and its easy to use. The hitch is a DrawTite brand. I have always used DrawTite hitches on all my cars and trucks (30 plus years pulling trailers) with good results.

I have one on My Beetle convertible and it works great. It is easier than my pickup truck.

I installed a trailer hitch on my Honda Civic a few weeks ago to replace a trunk mount I had been using for a few months. I was worried about damaging the trunk lid with the trunk mount, my bikes are pretty heavy.

I bought a Curt trailer hitch and Allen rack from Amazon and installed them myself in about 40 minutes. I use a bungee cord to keep the bike(s) from flopping around.

I used to put the bike with 26" wheels in the back of the car, but I had to remove the seat post and front wheel and I just got tired of doing that all the time. My 29er won't fit at all unless I remove one of the pedals.

I saw a Smart car pulling a trailer the other day! Pretty much can put a hitch on anything!

As everyone has said, you can put a hitch on pretty much anything as long as a company is making a hitch for that car. I've found hitches for my Sunfire, and it is about the same size as a Genesis.

Great pic! Thanks! Seems straightforward. I think the bungee cords are a must. It's tough to find a car that will let you put the bikes inside, but we're also still looking into that.
