Built up my own FS (newest bike, ridden the most), about $2700 cash, but that was for components that were totally my preference.

There's a gap between $500 and $1K....
For my current trail bike let's see....
$20 KHS frame
$35 stem/bar
$5 grips
$60 fork
$15 headset
$35 tires
$22 seatpost
$10 seat
$90 wheelset
$25 cranks
$482 total
gripshifts and derailers stolen from my Mongoose, which has XCPro thumbshifters now. Still need to get a back brake on, hopefully that won't be too much.
The Mongoose still gets ridden a lot, has Michellin Country Rocks on it for street riding.
I got it for $600. It was a 1996 model I got in 1997.

My Fat was 4,000 + when I had it built in 1999. It is worth it.

The roadbike doesn't count- this is the MTB forum.

I guess I'll throw out the crapper and the Raleigh...
Crapper - $34
Raleigh - It was free, but cost that poor nooblet his Motobecane Fly.
