So I finally got to see a Pugsly up close. I was genuinely shocked at those tires. They seemed significantly larger than what I had imagined. All of a sudden, I really want to ride one, lol.
I also took the plunge and bought clipless shoes. I've had enough of being told how much better clipless is. And with the season just starting to take shape, I decided to go for it. Pearl Izumi X-Alp seeks. Was told they're good shoes and they seem nice and stiff with good tread.

Also, I already have a nice set of crank brothers eggbeaters and have always wondered if they're up to mountain bike use? They aren't the kind that are built into a flat pedal.

I am not a fan of Crnk Bros pedals - their release mechanism feels mushy underfoot and they prerelease when you hit the bottom on rocks. Their cleats wear quickly and their durability is second rate. Lots of folks love them though.
In other news, I ordered a new frame and fork today.

Why didn't I go rigid earlier than I did?

How do you ever choose a new bike? there are so many! Everytime I try to settle on one to start saving I see another one I would like too.

Had much chance to ride it yet? Thoughts? I like the rigid for the indoor parks and I know it'll be great on a pumptrack if I ever finally build one. Haven't tried a bmx track yet. I could use it for limited street I suppose, but I'm not good enough to trade ultimate precision for that slightly bigger margin of error a suspension fork gives you.
And although dminor may disagree, its definitely sharpening up my relationship to the bike - after riding that rigid, my 100mm dj fork feels like 200mm. A dh bike will be like riding a couch.
For me it's 90% what I can get a deal on, 10% paint color.

It was also a good thing I did get the fork. When I pulled the fox off of the dmr, I noticed that the steerer was cracked.

I sheared off my rear derailleur. lol
So I guess time to upgrade!!!
It was a SRAM x4 (8-speed) so fairly low-end (Bike is a 2011 Spec. Hardrock sport 26). I've been slowly upgrading it and I wanted to do the drivetrain anyway.
I want sram x5. will I have to upgrade to a 10-speed cassette? I kind of think I'd like to because it opens up the option of going 2x10 at some point.

Well I almost got to finish building my new bike today. But.... they shipped the frame with the wrong rear shock so I get to wait another week and a half.

At work today, a guy came in wearing a shirt advertising a local MTB organization. I noticed it immediately & started talking to him about biking, & telling him that I'd really like to get into more freeride/DH-oriented riding, but the closest thing we have in the ATL-metro area is Blankets Creek (all the hype around here because last summer they completed a .5 mile DH section). As I'm telling him this, he shoots me a look as if to say "are you ****ing stupid?!" & swiftly says "Yeah I hear a lot about Blankets Creek because the old folks love the scenery, but I wouldn't even mention that place in the same sentence as 'freeride'. You should really check out Big Creek if that's what you're into."
I had heard of Big Creek before from some other older riders, & they reported that it was small; too close to the city; & not very well maintained. Well...
And just for comparison, this is the Blankets Creek DH section everyone has been telling me about:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGLhwum_f64
Words cannot describe how happy I am to find out this place not only exists, but is about 20 minutes closer to my house (right around an hour) than Blankets Creek. Two lessons learned: 1) Don't believe everything you hear, & 2) I need to get out & explore more!

I haven't had a chance to hit Big Creek yet, but I'll still probably hold Blankets as my favorite trails around here because it really is an amazing blend of flow, technicality, & beautiful XC scenery around Lake Alatoona. It's exactly what most people around here want, I just prefer more techy DH & less XC. Big Creek would be a good competitor if it was further outside the city & had more than ~6 miles of trails in total (2 of which being the "beginner's trail")
Next time you talk to him give him my compliments, he did a great job with what he had to work with!
