Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good road bike platform pedal?

Can someone recommend a good roadbike platform pedal? Strict platform, none of thsoe "hybrid SPD half-platform half-clipless" pedals please.

Before I went clipless was running Wellgo R146s on the CX. Not as big and chunky as a MTB pedal but studded for extra grip. Didn't look too out of place on a dropbar IMHO.

Any reason you don't want to go full on clipless?

Shimano Saint

VP Thin Gripsters

Nukeproof Electron or Proton (pin placement differs between the models)

Fyxation Gates, Black Ops, Stolen Thermalite are also much cheaper and decent.

Most of the bikes in my household are running clipless, but we do have one with these pedals:

....and they seem to work well enough for their intended purpose.

You have to decide whether you want pins. If you do, there are tons of good options because the MTB guys like flat pedals. I don't, because they wreck the bottoms of my shoes and once a year or so I'll bloody my shins dealing with the latest idiotic piece of bike infrastructure the city has installed. If you don't either, MKS makes a number of models that work well with regular shoes.

Do they make these in an SPD version?

Asking for a friend...

Unfortunately no, and with their compact design you can't fasten a toe clip either.

Same. Using them with 5.10 shoes and it's a very secure combination.

I go for Odyssey Twisted PC. $14 for black or white (don't get white, unless you like cleaning pedals with a toothbrush once a week). $17 for fancy colors.

If you don't wanna draw attention to your pedals, go with clear, pop in the included black dust caps, and the pedals will be pretty inconspicuous.

The Hope f20's looked like a great pedal, completely flat and grip even without pins, but at $155 they should be:

The Dmr Vault Pedals have worked well for being comfortable for larger feet but they're not as flat (you an get black pins for them as well):

Easton Flatboy Pedals are also very flat:

I've been really curious about these, but I keep feeling that that raised ridge in the middle might cause foot issues on longer rides...what's been your experience?

Seems like they would work better with a Speedplay.

I've never used platform pedals. Do they have a big advantage over the old-school clip-type pedals without toe clips?

BMX platforms are more comfortable and more secure, IME.

Those worked well with wooden soled racing shoes. At least the better ones did. Heritage stuff. I had that combo. Haha

What's your budget?

I just went with the newer version of DMR V12 Mgs, about $60, half the price and bit smaller than the Vaults. The older version is supposed to be bullet-proof. These are lighter, and I assume they're bullet-proof. Go figure.

Performance sells a version of the Neutrons for $50, usually available on sale.

These are BMX & MTB items, and I found lots of reviews and comments on BMX & MTB fora.

I haven't noticed any problem with that. I just ride these in sneakers and they seem very comfortable.
