Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I find that the trainer really exacerbates saddle issues. With my old saddle, I had problems at 45 min on the trainer that I wouldn't have had at 4 hours outside (since changing saddles, I no longer have the issue). That said, if the issue is just tissue pressure between the sit bones and the saddle, you might just need a little more time to get used to it. If you're 3 weeks of more in to your trainer sessions, then it's time to throw 'htfu' out the window and look for a new answer.

You have to crush that sympathy gene of yours and embrace the tough love gene.

Send them over here for a few weeks, they'll come back svelte killers, and will have forgotten all about their Egyptian heritage.

No, I got the job because I got some sense . . . at least enough sense to not ride in the rain.

Sometimes the weather dictates when you ride, other times, you do. Other times, there just may not be a choice in the matter.

Lol, I went to my fitter for the first time with my $600 entry level Trek when I'd only be riding for 9 months. Little did I know he was this elite fitter for pros and Olympians. Its amazing how much of a difference this one guy has made in my cycling life. He's an extraordinary individual, not your average fitter and we kind of really just hit it off on a personal level. I've probably seen him dozens of times for the three bikes. Our last session was an hour- 5 minutes of checking the bar position on the TT bike after the new stem and 55 minutes of chatting about where I should go next on a bike. Love him, he gets email updates on all the TT results, because he is one of the people who makes that all happen.

Never once treated me any differently than any of his elites. He didn't even cancel my follow-up fit when he was rushing to get everything done before flying to France to tweak fits during TdF. I totally would have been fine to put my minor fit issue off a few weeks to make his schedule a little easier. But he doesn't see it that way, he does not think the pro fits are any more important than mine. Love him.

All of this - a trainer ride will quickly let you know what you really think of your saddle, because you tend to actually sit on it the entire time without shifting for corners, standing up at lights, stretching on light downhills...

So until that settles down it seems like a waste paying for a really expensive super duper high tech fit, especially if I'll may need it done again in a few more months. Right now, the only complaint I have is a little lingering shoulder pain (it's going away, slowly), and this saddle on the trainer issue.

How often do you guys get fits? Is it just something you do when you get a new bike, or something you do a couple of times a year no matter what?
My fitter's fees:

First fit $325
Two free follow ups, after that he charges $50/hr. I can never get him to charge me for a follow-up though. I think he maybe only charges people who are being OCD about it.

Second bike, same fit (ie second road bike) was supposed to be charged. He also did not charge me for this.

Third bike, new fit (ie TT bike) was $100. Same deal with the follow up fits but he has never charged me.

I'm in for $425 and probably have spent a total of 20+ hours with my fitter. It depends on what is going on and how much I'm changing things- right now with the TT bike, I see him every 6-8 weeks. Its just when I have something come up.

My road bike fit has been changed very little since he first set me up- just one adjustment to saddle height.

Calorie counting rant: The weekend sucked due to unpredictability. I thought the work week would provide some normalcy. One of our vendors brought us lunch today from one of the North Texas institutions known as Babe's Chicken. In short: calorie laden food with no calorie info provided by the restaurant. Oh geez, so Lose It has some info for them, and I figure it out as best as I can. It was not a "light" lunch, but I'm still well within my cap, including the dinner I already had planned.
Then it dawned on me. My wife and I were going to a get together tonight where everybody brings random homemade food and the theme is comfort food. I could be totally rude and just not eat anything at all, but then my planned dinner at home would be eaten super late, and that isn't good, either.

So far, the only thing I've lost with the Lose It app is my mind.

I think if pcad had started in the music biz today as a young man, he may have had a future in it. Big may. Sort of like saying we all may have had a shot getting into the tour. But, there's a good and unusual quality to his voice, and that sells today.

That may be just what I need, then. Kind of like a cry once deal rather than something I'd need to budget yearly.

I coulda been a pro baseball player. But then **** happens and you wind up spending more of your time playing something else.

Just as well, I would've gotten in trouble with all the female groupies anyway.

Your diet is worth ruining for Babes! My family knows how unhealthy that place can be, but I manage to convince them to take me there for my birthday every year.

As far as people bringing stuff, in my experience nobody cares if you only eat a little bit of their stuff, just so long as you do eat some of it. That can be a pretty good meal, with lots of variety, just in lots of tiny portions.

I think the first couple of weeks are the hardest with calorie counting. There's the hunger (maybe), the planning, and the unexpected. It's when you learn to incorporate your diet properly into your lifestyle as a conscious decision. It'll get easier, for sure. Before long it will be second nature.

One tip I have is using the barcode scanner. I eat at the in-laws a bunch, and by now they know to leave the ingredient wrappers around for me to scan into MFP to get an accurate count. I guess they want to save me the trouble of digging through their trash . Just scanning the wrappers is so much easier than trying to search for something similar enough in the food databases. You can pretty much scan in the whole mean in less than a minute if you've got the wrappers around.

I sympathize with the calorie counters that have to watch their intake. I've been lucky throughout my life to be able to eat without much worry of gaining too much. My metabolism seems to self regulate, along with my decent eating habits - probably not nearly as good as some here on the forum. I have a narrow weight threshold, 185 - 190 lbs, 6'1". If I go above or below this range I really feel it. Since I've been going to the gym and gaining some muscle mass the weight has slightly increased. I don't drink much at all so no beer belly to worry about. If I didn't love cycling so much I'd likely be a couch potato with a nice size paunch.

Hey, those kind of days are anomalies, don't worry about it. Just calculate the calories as best you can and enter it. The total weight of all your normal days will far outweigh (no pun intended) the anomalic days.
