Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tires already worn?

I have had a pair of Michelin Pro 4 service course for about 3,000 miles now, and the top of the rear tire is flat. Is it possible they are already worn?

How can you tell the top from the bottom? Wouldn't want to mount a tire upside down...

And they can absolutely be worn out after 3K miles.

It's possible, but keep riding until you start to see cords showing.

That's about what I get for mileage out a Pro4sc on the rear. After 3k miles I start getting frequent punctures.

Yeah, I had similar wear. I wouldn't call them high mileage tires.

I buy cheaper tires, plus I am a heavier cyclist. I've never got 3K out of tires.

Yeah, 3k miles is about the limit for a Pro4sc as a rear tire.

If you buy them through UK shops, they usually go for $30-$35. I loved those tires until I switched to Pro4 Endurance. Almost the same ride and weight, and much more durable(and slightly better mileage).

Never gotten a single flat on these tires(knock on wood). Would switching the front tire with the rear help? The front tires have a lot less wear.

NO! I hope that doesn't come across as harsh, but that's asking for trouble. The front tire is the more critical in case of blowout so it's never a good idea to have a bad tire up there. If you don't want to buy two tires, move the front to the back and put the new one on the front.

Sheldon Brown has a good piece explaining this. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-rotation.html

3k miles is a perfectly reasonable replacement window.

3000 miles is excellent life to get out of a rear tire IMO, especially a narrow high pressure road tire.

I ride on Vittoria Rubino Pro's and I'd be really happy to get that kind of mileage on a rear. I just changed out my rear at 2k, because I had a spot or two where the rubber chunked out down to the cord.

2,932 miles on a Continental GP 4000 IIs. Just moved it from the front to the rear last weekend and this morning I slashed the side of it. So tonight I'll be heading to performance for a new one. I think for now on I'm going to replace both at the same time and stop worrying about the moving the front to back and putting new up front.

Dude, they're $25 tires and you got 3000 miles out of them. Just buy a new set.

Don't rotate back to front, just toss the old back or use it on the trainer or something. You could probably put the current front on the back, but it probably won't last long. New rubber will feel nice. Hell, throw on some new bar tape and it'll feel like a new bike.

Clydesdale rider here and getting 2200 out of a Conti GP 4000 II is great for me. so 3000 on a tire would be a miracle!

I don't know about Michelin but Conti has those little dot/pit wear indicators on the center tread of the tire (figuring that is what the OP means when he said top of the tire).

Though I do run mine a bit over that till I get a flat. Then I swap the tire.

Plus I do buy tires online for $35 of so vs the $75 at the local shops and I always have a stash so I never have to worry about when it is time to swap the tires.

I've never gotten 3K miles out of a rear tire. Normally, I ride them until the rear is work, and put on a new one. After that I normally replace both when the rear is worn again.

Anyway, yes, likely that the tires are worn.

Yep, about normal when i rode those. The MP4 Comp's were horrible though.. had a lot of flats and did not last long. not worth the weight saving.

also running Rubino Pro III's now (tho i have gatorskins on for winter) and have been happy with those so far

Don't wait that long. When the tire gets that worn, it's not safe and way more prone to flats. Most new tires have wear indicators on them. They are little dimples or holes in the tread. Some have one, some have two. When you can't see the dimples anymore, it's time to replace then.
