Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2009 Novara Strada

New to the forum. Here is my first "real" road bike. I recently bought it off of Craigslist. I've added the tires, pedals and saddle. Rides very nice.

Looks good. I love orange. Looks like the color on the tires matches the paint on the frame. It's so tacky when people go w/ colored tires that don't match.

Shifters are in a weird position though, doesn't that hurt after awhile?

Thanks. I lucked out that the color matches almost perfectly.

I've only put about 50 miles on it, but so far the shifter position is fine.

I use one like this, not as sexy, but it keeps my Samsung dry. Mine may be an older model cause I don't have a pen holder. It clips off so you can put it on your belt when you're not riding. Its a tight fit, but it works for me.

1982 Colnago Super.

All original except wear items and the bits that touch me or the road. I ride it often. It's made of steel and you have to shift by feel and sound, before you climb and not during.

Forgive me, I hang out exclusively in Classic and Vintage but couldn't resist.

Do you always have to support yourself with your arms since that Brooks is pointed crazy low?

That was part camera angle and part "just built, not adjusted." It's now more normal.

That colnago is very nice.

I'm not sure if I would have went with gold for the bar tape (cuz I get everything dirty all the time), but it works.

I want my next bike to be a nice vintage steelie.

Thanks. The tape is the same Benotto cellotape I used back in the day. No cushioning but it wipes clean easily. It looks better live when the yellow highlights on the logo are more apparent.

New (to me) bike: Scott CR1 Comp. Had to swap out the saddle, seatpost, stem and wheels, but everything else is stock. Got it off of craigslist for a steal and it has not a single mark on it. Fits me so much better than my Specialized Allez. Need to get used to the compact since I have been on a triple ever since I got into cycling (gonna be a lot of huffing and puffing up hills at a 50 cadence for awhile).

Is this equipped with Dura Ace 7800?

I wish, that would drop probably at least a couple of pounds off of the bike! No the bike is more humbly equipped with Tiagra 4600 throughout.

The cranks looked like my 7800's, still my fave group set looks wise.
Still a great bike!

BTW:
The jump to a compact from a triple isn't as bad as you think.
I tried to jump from my triple, to one of my standards, I hit the redzone 10kms from home, hit the wall with 3kms left, & the last hill of my ride.
Luckily I made it home to change bikes to finish off this ride with a "warm down" ride.

Well my low gear was a 26/30 on my triple, and now I have a 34/30...massive difference (for me). I'll get through it, although I'll have to avoid the 12%+ stuff for awhile (just not strong enough to muscle through that yet).

My triple is an ultegra 52-39-30T/ 13-26T (set up to mimic my standard)
Standard is Dura Ace 53-39T/ 11-25T
Compact is SRAM Red 50-34T/12-25T (I know..I know...I wanted to try carbon cranks)

I try to keep myslef from using the granny gear but my knee strength/leg isn't back to 100% yet, still rehabbing.
Its also great for forcing me to spin on 39 more than I used to.
I haven't used my compact enough to know how much I like it yet.

Yeah my triple is 8 teeth the other way, so much smaller than a 30/26
It's pretty hilly around here, and 20% grades are not terribly uncommon. I also have a bad right knee that I have to be careful with, so I will just have to see if I can eventually do all my normal climbs with this setup. Might bump up the cassette to 32, but will stick with what I have right now for a bit and see if the legs come around without damaging my knee further.

I love climbing, but my knee injury keeps me from pushing it too hard/far. I can't escape the hills either, I'm surrounded by them in my neighborhood.
Good thing is they keep me in shape.

You should be fine. There's a climb near me with a 19.2% ascent and i'm able to get over it with a 39/26. I'm not super trained or something like that so that shouldn't be a problem.
