Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nice ride today. Managed a few PR's and did one climb that I haven't done since my previous life. I forgot how nasty that thing was. Saw 24% a couple of times.

Another nice day for a ride today, enjoyed myself and saw at least 6 other roadies, which is some kind of record for me in Richmond!

After a week of wimping out, I decided it was time to do a steady burn on the highway, so I repeated the ~47-mile loop I did on Monday. Today's ride: https://app.strava.com/rides/7270295

Wind was slightly more of a factor and it was 20F colder, partly because I didn't start until about 7:30PM I only managed 20.7mph this time, versus 21.1mph. I did top all three of Monday's KOM marks, the first two by precisely ONE SECOND EACH. Over an 18-minute climb... well, how's that for consistency The third one went down big-time, though, I just big-ringed it (only 100ft vertical).

My Giro della Valle ride. This was my first time today. A little sketchy riding on Ventura, but, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

My longest ride to date:
https://app.strava.com/rides/7573374

Got a flat around 25 miles in. Was about halfway through changing it, when a British guy riding a hybrid stopped to see if I was ok. Then a huge group passed (I told him not to get run over). Just when I was putting the wheel back on, the stragglers from that group stopped, so I rode with them for about 20 miles to South Mountain Park.
Given my sheer distance, I had no intention of riding to the top of South Mountain (aka TV Towers), but I figured since I was there I might as well do something...and did the San Juan Trail.
Took the 'short' way home through Ahwatukee, Chandler Blvd, and around the Chandler Mall.

So question for you guys...this is my 2nd flat in 3 weeks. I think I rode on the tire when it was flat for a while the first time (today I stopped as soon as I felt it). Time for a new tire? How are Armadillos?

I guess I should have ridden around the park a couple times on the way home to get a nice round 3 digits.

Did eight tough climbs, ended up with a couple of PR's. 48 miles, 4,100 feet of climbing, average power 182 watts, normalized power 265 watts.

Swept the "podium" at the charity ride today, only because the fast guys did the metric. Closest guy to my group of 3 was 20 minutes back, main group finished ~45 minutes behind us. Kind of pissed we were shorted 10 miles on the century now that I think about it.

Another epic ride! Beautiful Sunday in Los Angeles and the weather was great. Not too hot.

The last four miles was a deviously steep climb. Felt like my rear brakes were on...

Nice rides people

I had some health problems this spring so this was my first ever actual training ride since I got my Edge500:

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/173272106

It wasn't sunny but much hotter than I expected ... I shouldn't have worn my long leggings and long sleeves for this one
Time to get out of winter-mode.

Just found this thread. Just started using my Garmin 500. Here is my weekend ride when I rented a bike in Scottsdale. Is there a way to find the road grade for the hills on the Garmin? Andy

same group ride, split with the 3 mile start to avoid dropping my average over the cruise section with the slow people...the rest is all HTFU...I'm surprised I rode so hard only with only a day off after the century Sunday.

Average HR 174! Nice!

My ride today: https://app.strava.com/rides/7726329 After work, I threw a pannier on my sport-touring bike and loaded it up with precautionary bad-weather gear, in case I got ambushed by a rainstorm. Then I ventured south of town about 35 miles to a rest stop along the highway, to see if they have the water faucet turned on (handy if I'm planning an out-&-back, I can refill at the rest stop). The faucet is on (yay) and it didn't rain (YAY!).

Average speed was 18.5mph, I'm sure the pannier's air drag took a bite out of that (plus I had headwind on the way out). Legs didn't feel that good, but oh well, that's why we train. 73 miles down, 1406 to go (Nuun challenge thing).

Random remarks:

1. it's not the most powerful headlight ever, but my dyno-powered Cyo N really comes into its element on a dark highway.
2. I can almost always find motivation by promising myself pizza afterwards
3. If I buy more Craft cycling shorts, I'm going up TWO sizes. These are a Large?!
