Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, I'm amused by people who think that manufacturers have a 2500% net profit margin.

One of the points I was tryijg to make that I feel every one is missing, is how to we even really know what we are buying but yet we maybe paying top dollar.

You go buy say a set of soul wheels just to make a example up. You think just because it says it on their site your buying some special hub and rim with all this research behind it when in reality you just bought a velocity wheel and Novatec hub. That says soul on it and just payed double for nothing. How do we know soul did research maybe they lied?

Now maybe soul wants to sell carbon wheels or whatever other smaller company. Wtf do any of then know about carbon? Ok. They go to china and do research and gist some factory's to learn say. The guy from soul says hey I don't want the cheap carbon I want the better stuff. China say oh yeah yeah we give you good stuff don't worry. Ok make me my wheels. How the eff does any of the smaller companies honestly know what they are getting? Are they testing it? But they still gonna charge 1500 dollars for it. But it turns out this wheel is exactly the same as the 300 dollar carbon wheel material wise with a little different design.

If you're unsure of the provenance of your gear, you're certainly not paying top dollar.

Cycling is the same as any other sport. Try shopping for tennis or golf or running or anything, and the prices run the same gamut. Or, you can go to Target, and get a decent athletic shirt (without rear pockets) for $15.

...except that the no-name/counterfeit stuff has no QC, no customer support, and lots of caveat emptor.

It probably isn't. But even if it is, that's no guarantee that they are the same quality, use the same fabrics, use the same QC and so forth. They certainly don't have the same management, same distributors, same marketing, and so forth.

Also, some items are more quality-sensitive than others. I've noticed that typically, more expensive shorts and bibs are in fact higher quality.

As already noted, no one makes you spend a single thin dime that you don't want to. If you want to buy cheap jerseys from Nashbar, go for it. No one is forcing you to buy a $250 Assos jersey.

And if you want to get jacked for a sport, try golf. Or sailing. Or anything with a motor.

So what are you kvetching about?

I do think carbon bikes are outrageous in costs.
The red Honda on the left was $5,999 MSRP in 2013 which is the bike I have. Now look at those fancy Sworks bikes and all those 10k bikes and tell me which has one rip off margins.
Ugg- they look like those "Transformer toys".

Exactly. Buy quality and up front costs are high, but it lasts a long time. I spend maybe 200 dollars a year or less on cycling.

Just felt like popping in... I'm out in WA now and took a spill mountain biking--minor crash, but after I landed my bike hit me in the eye and I had a nice orbital blowout fracture. My Rudy Project Genetyks probably saved my career because they protected my eyeball from disaster... Had my ORIF almost 4 weeks ago now but I'm off the bike for at least 2 more weeks. So I've had a bit more internet time than usual.

Still in the military? I'm off cycling as well for the past month. Arthritic hip has gotten to the point of no return and I go in for a Hip replacement on Monday August 4th. Good to have you back.

Hey since everyone on here is so smart and wise why don't you tell me what job you have in the cycling industry since everyone seems to know so much? Unless I missed it I did not see one answer to really anything I asked which I was just curios to learn about it. You all read this article and get back to me. It's actually a great read tbh but it pretty much told me everything I need to know and says exactly what I said a few posts up of what possibly could happen. That article is mostly pointless (in terms of what you are saying). It doesn't address costs or margins even once. It is a very basic article aimed at end users.

And to answer your question, I own a company that designs and brings bicycle products to market (including carbon fiber products). We work mostly in the OE with a few ODM products (and increasing). We also havs a B to C website but that is only a small part of what we do.
