Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well that sucks. I'll be interested to hear if they determine the cause - I would assume that he was relatively healthy.

Exploding handlebars theft deterrent! Yessss!

Accidental detonation would kinda suck, though.

How long 'til Specialized sues?

Back from ski. Did 2.2 miles. Strava'd it, of course.

Sorry to hear about Steve Hed passing. Relatively young.

Budget is under $500 and 3 leading contenders are Rega RP1, Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, and Music Hall MMF 2.2.

Issue one is whether one of these really outshines the others, I suspect not.

Issue two is how important is it to buy from a brick and mortar shop to help with setup or other snafus vs. mail order (eg Crutchfeld). It seems like setup of these is pretty simple out of the box, but I might run into questions, so I am leaning towards buying local. There is a Rega dealer only 5 miles from me, so that may be a factor.

Crutchfield is really helpful in setting up your stuff bought from them. I wouldn't rule them out.

Ooooh, Giro Alpineduro is down to $128 at Western. I might just have to get some before the next cold snap.

Only bad review is from someone who based their size choice off the size of their Birkenstocks.

There is a Rega dealer only 5 miles from me, so that may be a factor.
Sometimes better is a matter of preference and sometimes better is just better. If you were to sit down with all three, I'm sure that you'd have a preference, but I think that it would be a small preference rather than a "better is better" type of situation. That said, it would still be the Rega that gets my money. They have a budget 'table pedigree that no one else can match and, while out-of-the-box sonic differences may or may not be huge, that pedigree shouldn't dismissed - it means parts (original and upgraded) and support because of a built-in, decades long following. So, if we were looking at a check-list, I'd give the Rega slender victories in: a) out-of-the-box hardware/performance b) better long-term viability because of parts availability and c) better future performance potential because of upgradeability. That you have a shop nearby would be the icing on the cake (as long as they're not French showers, which is not terribly uncommon, unfortunately) and making friends with the tech is always a good thing.

Would buying a Pro-Ject or a rebadged Pro-Ject be a bad thing? No and, in fact, if they had a local presence and Rega did not, I'd probably lean the other way. All things equal, though -- Rega.
