Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone here talk to @RUOkie on the other side of the internet or elsewhere?

His last activity was over 2 weeks ago, I hope he is ok. His last known whereabouts involved a dinner with a certain Addictionite.

Hmm....

You know of any online how-tos for fashioning a flask holder out of bronze, leather and twine?

I think he is probably ok. He has disappeared from here before for a few weeks at a time.

Even PCAD has gone away a few times. But he keeps coming back for more.

...as you might imagine, on a Tweed Ride, the intricacy, ornate decoration, and valuable antique nature of the pocket flasks approaches that of the bikes.

I had a dream where that's what I got for Christmas this year. Then I woke up and my old, broken, two wheel drive version of the same car was still parked out front.

What a disappointment.

I hesitate to even mention here because some of the anti-technology types will inevitably just chime in how this is proof that technology has no place in cycling. Which in itself is frustrating when you are posting about something frustrating.

Strava/Garmin estimates 2100 calories burned. We were out on the course 12.5 hours, but moving time for me was 9 hours. I ate 10.5 pkgs Cliff Bloks (1100 cal), 6 bottle Skratch (480 cal), half a small turkey sub (about 250 cal), 1 bag potato chips (about 250 cal), one slice cheese pizza (about 350 cal), half a can of Coke (around 75 cal) and some inka corn (kind of like corn nuts, around 200 cal). Plus 8oz skim chocolate milk right after ride (175 cal). Almost 3000 cal. I actually was hungry around the time we got the pizza, which is why we stopped. And a little hungry towards the end. But otherwise not hungry on the ride.

I also had a normal breakfast (500ish cal) and was totally craving Chinese food after the ride. So I had 6 pan fried dumplings, maybe 1 cup fried rice & a bowl of hot & sour soup. Probably 800 calories. So if the ride burned 2100 and my normal daily caloric requirement is around 2000 cal, I actually probably had a caloric excess for the day of 300 cal. Which I think is pretty realistic, I am working on gaining the freshman 15 with this coach. I have yey to find the right balance with calories in vs calories out.
I was thinking about consumed per hour. The totals and other info you posted give me what I was looking for. The totals are even better. I have not got calories in vs out right either.

Eating for exercise, and keeping the same, or loosing weight seems almost impossible. I always seem to gain a little weight when I eat enough to not bonk on a century. I need a minimum of 2000 on a century to feel good when I'm done. 3000 in the cold is better. I'm always trying to get it right. Yesterday the cold just started. That will probably make comparison to someone riding in the heat useless.

I did 65 miles in 44 degree starting temps to 31 at the end yesterday. In the cold I get dehydrated easily. The dry air may have something to do with it. When properly dressed for the temperatures you don't sweat much and you can go harder in the cold for longer. You feel stronger longer, but it fools me sometimes. I need more calories in the cold of course, but at the time I'm riding it seems like I need less. It's easy to forget to drink enough in the cold too.

I don't much care for live musical performance, but I find it, especially opera, to be delightful in recorded form. Listening to opera in my own family room is sublime. Opera video recordings are also quite special when viewed at home. It must have to do with being completely comfortable and able to do other things while enjoying the music.

Ran today, but I was fooled by the sun and underestimated how cold it was. I would have been more comfortable with gaiters and a balaclava.

Jealous of your Tarmac SL3. I'm tempted to shop around for those next year, I want external cabling and threaded BB.
2011 S-Works SL3 doesn't have a threaded BB, so cross it off your list.

I was at a Greek-owned breakfast and lunch restaurant today. The baklava wasn't pink.
