Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's impressive, what climbs do you tackle with the 13 pounder?

Ha ha. Well we have a long overpass here in Houston called the Viaduct that is about 1.5 miles long over a bayou and a rail yard. I do that on a regular basis. Seriously, I don't climb. Between a reduced cardiac ejection fraction due to a heart sttack and a heavy regimen of beta blocker, I just don't have any wind for climbing. I stopped taking a bike with me for the summer at Lake Tahoe. It was just no use. Strictly a flatlander. Sorry to disappoint you.

???

I've probably mentioned before that I ride pre-dawn with the princes. I'm the only one that actually has a training schedule and it blows my mind that they will usually just do whatever ride I need to do. Typically we do a pretty intense 2 hour ride at 4:30am.

Tomorrow I need to do a recovery ride, just one hour. I tell them I cannot expect anyone to ride with me that slowly. One of the princes can't make it, the other says, shut up. He wants to ride my recovery ride with me. WTF? Ok, way better than the trainer but I'm kind of filled with guilt over it.

Then, we've been admiring this guy we all started following on Strava. He does crazy things like climb 7000 ft in 35 miles at 3:30 in the morning. And he makes great Strava art like this reindeer the other day:

Anyway, we talked this guy into joining our cycling club. And now into joining our nightcrawler group. Then the prince who's riding with me tomorrow invites him for his first ride with us on my recovery ride for tomorrow. And WTF he says yes. He doesn't care, he's going out right now to climb a bunch of hills, he will need a recovery ride himself by morning.

My response is no way, the prince & Rembrandt should just do a real ride together now that there's two of them and I will just ride my trainer. They refuse, and are going to meet me at 5:15 am. To ride ridiculously slowly, in the cold & dark.

Somebody explain this to me, please. I honestly don't get it.

What made you decide to build this over an areo bike? Unless this is both, which is insane.

When doing recovery rides its nice to have some company, particularly in the dark. Everyone should be mixing recovery rides into their training plan. I have a recovery week coming this week and find these sometimes the hardest to do since you're forced to keep the efforts in Zone 1. Its easy to have a conversation while riding in Zone 1 as opposed to your other rides.

Cougar would win. And yes, gator tastes like chicken.

Who's left standing? Great horned owl, hawk, Jack Russell terrier, housecat & cougar.

I think the next round should be owl v hawk and the ever-classic dog v cat.

Then round three the winner of owl v hawk plays the winner of dog v cat. And finally the winner of that takes on the cougar.

My money is actually on the Jack Russell terrier.

Great horned owls are apparently apex predators. I'm betting on the owl. A cougar might be a bit too big for it though.

Amazing. When I was out there years ago, I hiked in some places that had mountain lion warning signs. Did not really take them seriously. Guess that was a mistake!!

You haven't lived until you have had to go into your greenhouse in your underwear at 12am to separate 2 raccoons from 2 Shar Pei's armed with only a rake. The 400K was fun that morning on 3 hours of sleep. Certainly not gators, or lions, but that's my brush with wildlife in the backyard.... Other than the Apryl and Delta getting sprayed by skunks.

I don't ride fast enough for aero to be a factor. Plus I don't handle a bike very well; my short experiment with 50mm deep rims was very unpleasant re: crosswinds. Also I am a weight weenie up to the limits of my budget, and aero generally involves a weight penalty compared to non-aero. The weight weenie thing is just goal setting, and hobby project work. Something to keep busy with. Like I want to shave another hundred grams; what is the cheapest way to do it. A little something to occupy the mind.

There are still a few places to take some more weight off, but I am not giving up my 227 g saddle for anything lighter, I won't fool around with tubulars, and a lighter crank is too expensive. If I ever spring for SRAM wireless shifting on one of the other bikes, I will move the 10-speed Red to the Romic in place of the Rival, which will shave a little weight. But there it stands.
