You might want to go look at the sizing websites for those bikes. The 55 SE standover is only 7/10 of an inch less than the 57 critical and the top tube on the 57 critical is shorter than on the 55...

It came with brakes, maybe the seller still has them. If not, you can get them very cheap on flea bay, just look for some dual pivot brakes or just a front brake. Levers are cheap too.
