I use them on my commuter hybrid and they work...

I use them on my commuter hybrid and they work great. Started with them on the road bike too but prefer the speedplays for longer rides and pushing harder.

I use just this combination of pedals and shoes and have been very happy with them. Not strictly necessary, but if you go with the speedplays, I'd recommend the Keep On Kovers...
