Very true, just need to refine the routine so I'm not scrambling in the AM to find decent food. Alternatively, find hotels near the race to stay.

Gotcha. That is a doable ride and I think it'd be more favorable for me as I tend to get worked over on the hills. I can hide and work at high speeds on flats, but can't hide from hills.

oh and in the spirit of n+1, looking for a different bike in the offseason. bought the current one on a whim and didn't know what I was looking for, so i'll get something with better geo for my body.

Yeah...I had a road bike before, but never used it ('06 Felt F65). Bought a new bike this year (March; Giant TCR Composite) and would ride it to and from the gym (~6 miles round trip) a couple times...
