best clip in mtb pedal for brakeless riding

I currently use road shoes and pedals to ride but they are really awkward off the bike. I want to use my dominators that I ride my cross bike with but I don't dare use my current egg beaters. What do you guys think is the best mtb pedal for riding a brakeless track bike? I'm also going to use these pedals on all of my other bikes too. I'm looking for something that engages really well and holds on so I won't have to worry about unclipping while sprinting or stopping. I was thinking about Time atac as that is what I see messengers use in portland where I'm from. Any other ideas or recommendations?

I use my Crank Bros for Everything, including fixed riding. Never had an issue, though if someone told me SPD was more secure, I'd believe it.

From what I have heard from others, the Time Atacs are the way to go.

I have managed to pop out of my eggbeaters once or twice. Could of been the cleats needed replacing, could of been the skid, could of been something else. Either way, it wasn't a big deal.

Same price as Crank Bros' lowest Eggbeater (MXR), and a TON better. You have to go up 3 levels in the Bros' line to get something nice, while Time is pretty cheap. I find not having at least a small platform gives me bad hot spots too.

Is there a specific model that works best ie high spring tension? The new aluminum ones are pretty cheap but I usually see people using the plastic square ones. Is there a difference or just weight?

^ what peabody said

I bought my atacs from a bike shop that was going out of business for $20. brand-new. but if you're not as lucky as I happened to be, I believe jenson has the best price for them.

plastic square ones?
the older versions were less spaceship looking and all black and square
but not plastic -- aluminum (hence the name time atac alium).

I believe the step up from the aliums is the xs, which is just lighter because it's made from some composite material -- but those arent the ones you see because they look like a spaceship and are red/black.

I have a set of flat pedal one side and flip side is SPD. I love them and I've had them for years now.

Crank Bros. Candy Pedals work well I've heard. The plate allows you to stay in a little better when you skid. A friend of mine who rides brakeless swears by it.

go with regular Time Atac XS pedals, but don't waste your $ on the carbon version. You will not feel a difference in the few grams that are saved. Believe me, I'm one example of a moron who did and felt no .0002 time difference (I did get the carbon version for the same price as the regular version, but I had to look for the deal though)

I'm a big Crank Bros fan. I have 3 versions of the Crank Bros - Eggbeaters, Candy and Quattro (road). They all work with my Sidi Dominator 5's and I have ridden all of them on my fixed gear at one point. I am running the Quattro on my fixed gear currently because the bigger platform is good for brakeless riding, I find.

I like the Eggbeaters when I go offroad because it allows for more float - the stated float in degrees is the same as the other models, but it just seems more unrestricted compared to the others.

do you ride these?
i have, my experience is they are horrible for fixed gear.
i think maybe you could use them if you don't intend on doing any skidding/things that could inadvertently torque your foot(ever had to do some funky acrobatics to keep a trackstand on bad pavement?- you just un-clipped then).

I recommend time atacs if you're the kind of person who wants something that wont break, works every time, and wont unclip and kill you.

I ride them because they don't unclip unless you want to, and I skid all the time.

been using them for a couple years now riding brakeless as a messenger

SPD's are fine if the cleats and pedals are fresh and new and the tension is dialed all the way up, other than that they can and will unclip accidentally sometimes. ATACS wear out in a similar fashion Ive found.

The only thing about the frogs is you can get stuff like snow/ice/mud packed into the cleats if you aren't careful which means some cleaning sometimes.

+1 that entire assessment.

I've ridden both fixed and Atac is tops, Eggbeaters are at the bottom. SPD in the middle.
