Hey guys. I just can't seem to find any damn windbreakers at my local target etc. I just want something to guard against the wind. every single sweater/jacket I have, which isn't much, is not wind proof. the only one i have that IS windproof is far to heavy to ride in.

Doesn't necesarily have to be made by a bike related company or bike specific, although that would make a lot of sense XD, i just need a jacket to guard against wind cuz i jiust can't find one...

Most jackets i see on bike speicific websites i.e. Chrome, do not explicitly indicate that they are windproof etc..if they ARE, please let me know.

I got a black one when Helly had 'em on their own site for $40. They're pretty good even @ $80, though.

i herd you like waterproof, so i put windproof in your c-change so you can made in vancouver, bc while you designed in america.

good ain't cheap and cheap ain't good.

however, if you want to spend 60 dollars you can get a good value. it's just not going to be the orion.

I definitely agree that the orion is a great jacket. I was leaning more onto the fact that they're hard to find now.

The Marmot Precip is a good value, for the OP. You didn't name a price range though so charlie's recommendation is as good as mine

Bought a Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier jacket at L.L. Bean two days ago for $40, a nice light windbreaker a velcro closure pocket in the back.

I have a Precip also. Another awesome jacket. Not as comfy as the Helly Hansen Seven J when you're wearing a shortsleeve shirt underneath because it's not lined and that plastic on the bare skin isn't all that comfy for me.

Drawback of the Seven J is no pit zips.

Just go to REI or Dick's and look at some North Face, Columbia, and Nike stuff. I got a Nike "ACG" windbreaker/rain jacket from Dick's a couple years ago and it is fantastic for any kind of wet or cold riding.

I have a marmot precip and it works really well for wind and rain. One compliant is that after while in the rain it gets saturated, but the water doesn't pass through regardless.

I have a jacket from Performance that is pretty nice. I cant remember the model but I think its like the "Century" or something like that. Anyways, its a good jacket for the price (~$60, definitely not a cheapo). Very lightweight and it packs easily into a rear jersey pocket. I would rate it 4.5/5 in the wind. I've used it everyday as my outer layer for the past three winters, with only a thermal baselayer and jersey underneath (vest over the top for 15 and colder). However, I would only give it a 1/5 for water resistance. In a downpour it stops "resisting" after 5 minutes, but is good in a light drizzle. Hella breathable too.

Love my Columbia Bugaboo... interchange system allows me to use the shell and fleece liner as separates and usually opt for a wool sweater instead of the fleece which is a fine jacket on it's own.

Bought it to handle the PNW winter two years ago and it handles this extremely well and also gets me through the Canadian winter with the aforementioned wool sweater.

I have an old Ashton golfer's windbreaker I bought at Goodwill for $2. I've worn it through thunderstorms and been dry, I've worn it through Chicago Lakefront winds and not gotten cold. I wore it on a quick ride tonight. 35 degrees, rainy, 25 mph winds... I was fine.

yeah. i can't really say much other than if you divide the time i spend in the rain by the comfort and enjoyment i get out of that jacket it's well, well worth it. i don't think i knew what 'high quality' meant before this.

maybe it's not worth the money to you, and that's fine, but i'm not rich by any means... but uh, i guess i'm in the rain a lot?

most breathable 100 dollar jackets are NOT waterproof. my friend builds hiking trails and he said goretex will soak through after you've been out in the rain. even when i've been out in the rain in 3ply laminate jackets like my conduit dt, the way the jacket was cut had it dripping down my pants on a bike. this jacket hasn't once let me down in any way. i wear it all the time, even as just a outer layer when it's cold.

yeah aesthetically the MWS stuff is great looking. I guess if you're in the NW it makes sense. I don't think I ride in the rain enough to justify spending for it, even if it's gorgeous and well made. I'm returning some stuff at REI today, had a similar question to the OP, so maybe I'll find something I can come back and recommend!

everyone seems to love their precip and besides the butt-tinkle drippage i liked my mountain hardware just fine.
rei seems to have pretty good offerings.

i've owned alot of "cycling" and non cycling rain jackets (more than the total cost of the orion) and srsly, i shoulda just bought this first.

stoopid expensive, but it fits me so great, does all the things it should, and im not annoyed with anything about it (except the outside breast pouch is useless when wearing bag)

second best i owned (and still own) was an outdoor research jacket. still like it alot, but its no wear near the functionality and fit of my orion.

it is insanely expensive, and i guess i find that annoying too

I used to think MW stuff was ridiculously overpriced as well. Then I got a Vandal, and was like, "whoa."

Then I got a Bosun, and was like, "Whoa."

Then I tried on an Orion, and it felt like Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, as he puts on the wizard's hat.

So they're out of stock until February. But that's OK, because I've earmarked $400 of my tax return for it.

Ah, anyways...my outer-shell is currently a Chrome Anza. It's good as a wind-breaker, and is only water-proof in the sense that it will hold up in light, misty drizzles. If you happen to be caught in a pretty good rain-storm (as what will surely happen in Chicago), you're in for some misery.

It's been my experience with cycling clothing that you get what you pay for. I started with the cheap Performance stuff and worked my way up and so far, everything has been well worth the extra cash. I haven't gotten to the Rapha/Assos level yet; Hincapie/Castelli/high-end Pearl Izumi have kept me satisfied thus far.

Waterproof and windproof mean that if I'm riding hard it'll get too hot in a hurry. Windproof tights were too binding on the knees and not necessary for my 30's F riding limit. I don't need to commute by bicycle in the rain so I've not focused on waterproof though I have some waterproof(actually water resistant) jackets that are useful at the start of rides until I get warmed up or if I'm stopped long enough to cool down.

I think it's better to have a lightweight water proof or resistant shell and wear that over your winter jersey or jacket than to have one jacket that does both. That would probably end up being too warm to wear for very long unless you are riding slowly(as with grandma).

I prefer layers. One can always remove a windbreaker and ball it up and shove it in a pocket.

Just bought a Columbia Field Gear winter jacket that's supposedly waterproof and windproof $80. Will see how it goes.
