I'll be wandering around eastern Oregon again this summer for a couple of weeks on the LHT and will be passing through Baker City at least once. I notice many Trans Am riders stay in an RV park there and I was wondering which one is favored. Looks like there is a couple of them, any suggestions?

Don't know about the RV parks, but I did some great stealth camping in the area a few years ago, up toward Goodrich Lake.

Bruce, The Mountain View Holiday Trav L Park is very friendly and has shade and grass. I've stayed there several times leading Adventure Cycling TransAm tours. Baker is a fun town to stop over in. Check out the brew pub downtown. A good bike shop also.

I went from Portland to Nampa in August before school started. I ended up going from La Grande to Ontario though, not stopping in Baker for long. They do have a beautiful library though. and it looked pretty prime for some stealth camping.

We were lucky enough to pass through Baker City when there was a big bike race. They had the high school grounds open for camping and even had snacks and stuff. There was no hot water but at least we had showers. I think we might have paid $5. We made some friends and it was fun hanging out with the racers. If you should happen to be there race weekend check it out.

FWIW we usually avoid RV parks and only use them as kind of a last resort. Most of the time they are expensive and not very nice for tent camping, but there are exceptions. As a result we would usually consider staying in a smaller town and camping in whatever spot we could get permission for often the town park.

Stealth camping in Eastern Oregon is another name for " sleeping with the cows". I've heard on Crazy Guy that Baker City is pretty nice so figure I'd make a stop there and yes, I usually avoid RV parks although in E. Oregon the most I've ever had to spring for has been 10 bucks. I will check on their rates first though!

My first encounter with camping in a city park was Unity Oregon, I learned all about automatic sprinklers there.

With all the public land around BC there isn't much "stealth" to it!

FWIW, some of the other towns around there were nice too. Sumpter, Richland, and Halfway were all nice stops, but the only one of those we stayed over in was Halfway. They had a farmers market (I think it was on Sundays) in the middle of town where we bought fresh baked sticky buns.

If your tour goes through Baker City you have to stay at the best motel deal on the TransAm. The Oregon Trail Motel, on the east end of downtown, offers a cyclists special rate of only $37.50 that includes 2 full breakfasts the next morning. They have clean rooms, A/C, pool, and laundry room too. You have to ask for the "cyclists special" though.
