I can tell him. I'm pretty sure he'll be at the races here this weekend. Team Type 1 has been training around here lately and as far as I know the whole team is coming to the road race on saturday and the crit on sunday.

I don't think anyone really gets this thread. We're choosing someone who has never had any national media attention, results or anything since turning pro.
Don't choose the guy who just made it onto the front page of VeloNews, or Steven Cozza, who friggin everyone now knows.
Rory Sutherland? Serious? The guy whos won the NRC series twice!? Are you off your rocker?
Pick and choose any no-name rider the same nationality as his team. Your friggin welcome.

The onyl one of those that is the 2009 roster is Rabobank, I believe. Or wait until the teams' ToC selections come out and cohhse some no-namer.
Isn't the goal to root form someone who doesn't even know he has any fans?

Tell him we want to publish his diary here - he can Twitter it or e-mail it to you.
His team doesn't have much of a web site but they do have a blog.
He's likely to understand and appreciate this more than Maarvan Van Vantwerp.
All live spectators must try to get his photo during the race and post them in the Ken Hanson thread.

+1, don't tell him anything. Just let him wonder, and possibly be inspired, at all the attention he keeps getting.

Joao ("Little John" to riders in the area) works for Bicycling Magazine, has a blog (in English), and got second at the Industry Cup race in Vegas in 2007 (racing for Bicycling). He's an extremely talented rider, knows English well, and rides like he was born on a bike. Which he sort of was.
However, he'd be a good guy to ask who we should root for, because he knows a lot of those guys. It was him that got Marc Wauters (Rabobank) to do Gimbles one day.
I still think AG2R. They are here for vacation, no racing, no sponsors, nothing. It'd be out of the blue for a section of Palomar to be plastered with one of their rider's name, and a minor guy at that. Just hope that he makes it that far.

I posed the same question on my team's web site, here's one of the responses:

Ivan Santaromita - Team Liquigas
Ivan is 24 years old and turned pro in 2006. He`s listed as a Climber on the Liquigas team page. I think he may have won something when he raced in the U23 categories, but it`s in Italian. The short descriptions on his bio page lead me to believe his English is "Not-a so good".
Bio is Here
His future plans? "Win".
Gert Dockx - Team Columbia
This 20 year old Belgian rider can`t possibly have been a pro with Team Columbia very long. He still looks like Doogie Howser. Gert made his own webpage, but it`s all in Belgish, so I can`t understand it. Still, I imagine it talks about who his favorite Spice Girl is, and how bad he wishes he could fit in with the cool kids at school.
His webpage is Here
And finally (for now)...
Joaquin Novoa - Cervelo Test Team
The 6` phenom from Spain is a likely domestique. However, the 25 year old just turned pro this year, so it may be unlikely that he`ll join the team for the ToC. The sentences (if you can call them that) on his bio look like someone else put them in for him. His interest in IT leads me to think he may not speak English, and furthermore may not even speak at all.
Scroll down about halfway to his bio
Oh, and did I mention he rides for the Cervelo Test Team?

Oh, I'm game for a Banner, too; I'll pay for it, and ship it to whomever wants to be next in line. The catch: I have no design skills. Someone would need to volunteer for this part.

*raises hand* I'd like to get on the banner list if our boy makes it to the Tour of Utah in August. We'd need to hoof it though, since there's only a couple of weeks until the ToC starts.
Good call, ElJ.

Edit: Err, Oops I think I misinterpreted that. You mean the selection of who to root for, not who is chosen to ride in the ToC. <insert pre-coffee excuse here>
Carry on. This is a great idea. This combines two of my favorite things: bicycles and messing with peoples' heads!

I think this is such a great idea.
I don't know too many professional cyclists to make a choice but I agree as long as they are new to the pro's, have not won anything decent, and dont speak english (not necesary but still funny). Can you imagine coming to this country as an "unknown" pro and seeing your name on signs, posters, chalked on the road ect...? That has to be a great feeling although the motive behind it is kind of messed up lol.

Nah, let's not be cynical. The motive is to show some love for an unknown. It's weird, but nice.

If you decide that a domestic is ok... the guy I would recommend is Omer Kem. I'm good friends with him.... he's never held the spotlight but he's been a super domestique for Bissell. Never flashy, just gets the job done- injured or not. I'd also say he's one of the toughest guys in the US and is a has a large amount of HTFU. I'd even say he's the poster boy for HTFU. He's the guy you see sitting at the front of the peloton pulling for long periods either setting tempo or bringing in breaks. He's the one who leads the climbers to the base of the climb then drops back to the laughing group. He's the one who takes 10 water bottles (yes, that many) up to his teammates from the team car.
He's been around... rode for Subway, then Monex (and got screwed) then was picked up by Priority Health. He's well respected by the peloton but not well known outside it. If you have a chance to sit down and chat with a pro about the dynamics in a peloton, it's pretty neat. There's a pretty big hierarchy- that even spreads to how they socialize. Crazy. But- back to the original topic- OK is a guy who would probably appreciate it a lot.
