Sat - Folsom Crit - Cat 4
My first race as a 4. Legs felt good and the roads were still wet from the overnight rain. Goal was to help a teammate place high but we were disrupted by a crash with 1 to go. Finished 14th. Teammates finished 7th and 12th.
Sat - Folsom Crit - Cat 3/4 Master 30+
Much smoother than the 4 race, and noticeably faster. With 6 to go we started to work the front. I fell back with a few to go and finished mid pack for 28th. Honestly, my goal was just to finish with the pack so I'll take it. Teammates finished 3rd and 4th, with a few more ahead of me.
Sun - Cal Aggie Crit - Cat 4
I made sure to spare some matches for this one. The course has two chicanes that really stretch out the field. I stayed near the front for the most part, as the Cal Aggie team threw down a barrage of attacks. They were reeled in every time, but it made for a fast race. I almost took the second prime but fell short (the guy was OTF early in the lap). I spent some time up front toward the end, mostly for postition, but I managed to recover by the final lap. Got swarmed in the straightaway, though, but gained a lot of ground between the two chicanes. By the last turn I moved up to about 10th wheel and managed a 7th place finish. My best finish in a crit but just short of upgrade points. I did get the team some BAT points, at least.
A successful weekend of racing (for me).

2nd Day ToNB Crit.
Led teammate out (poorly) for the 1st lap $50 prime, which we won. Cha-ching.
2nd lap, pulled out the big weapons and started attacking. I attacked and counter attacked myself the entire race. Over and over. Part trying to keep my teammate safe and get him some points, part trying to test my own limits, part trying to add a lot of pain to the mix. Several times I got a group going, but we couldn't get organized fast enough to get away, and the pack was more than willing to CHASE THEIR OWN TEAMMATES down, so yea, made it tough to get away.
I only stopped attacking once we heard the final lap bell, and jumped on a wheel of someone that was fresh (or just not dumb enough to try what I tried). I played the moves pretty well, and I had about 4th or 5th place going into the sprint. About 200m from the line I start getting banged into pretty good, barely saved myself from eating asphalt, and coasted a ways in for 12th. I have a huge lumpy bruise on my shin from where someones pedal slammed into me, and images of my front wheel coming off the ground when the guys quad was hitting my handlebars. Didn't hit the pavement at least, so I count myself lucky.
The most memorable moment was when a guy rolled up to me after I just got caught for the 4th or 5th time and say "Hey whats up?" I reply "Nothin". He says "They aren't going to let you go, they aren't going to let anyone go". I reply "So you wanna go with me?" He get a HUGE grin and says "Ahh, why not". Gotta love rallying the troops. =)

ToNB Crit:
I did not accomplish my mission. I'm still a 4. However, today was a great day to race a bike:
I woke up feeling pretty crappy. Legs were very sore from yesterday and they felt like the muscles had been filled with lead. It's 27 degrees, my legs feel terrible, I'm tired and I don't want to race...but I did. We were at the start line getting the cat 4 lecture and I was shivering so bad that I had trouble keeping my balance. Warming up before was not good. Legs felt heavy and I couldn't get 500w without feeling like it was everything I had...now I was shivering and regretting that I showed up. Then the gun sounded and I took off for a lap on the front at 340w, this got some blood flowing and the warmth started to creep in. I felt good...no I felt great. I rode a smart race...kept near front...jumped in on two or three promising breaks that ended up petering out...last 2k I was 4th wheel feeling great, I had picked my spot on the previous lap and I was gonna go full on at that point. Don't know how messed this up but I jumped about 100m early...realized it too late but I was committed...dug deep but got swamped around 50m from the finish...somewhere in the top 15 but although I didn't win (that was the goal of course) I felt great, recovered well for a guy pushing 50 and beat up on some young'n's today. I had great time.
Saw JohnnyButts up there a bit today pushin' pace...he looked like he was have a better than yesterday as well.

Raced twice today at Cal Aggie.
Cat 3: had no warm up (scrambling to get the kids to the grandparents for the afternoon) so I just treated it as a warm up. Lots of surges and a couple of attempts to form breaks but nothing got away. I found myself near the front on a prime lap with 5 to go so I went for it from 300m out. Found out I only have 100m worth of sprint. Popped and pulled myself.
M123: lined up behind local legend and reality tv star Chad Gerlach (who won from a 6-man break, I think). Much smoother and faster than the 3's race. Just wanted to sit in and finish in the main group. Which I did, so I'm satisfied. It's a long season, and I want to peak in mid-May. Just have to keep reminding myself.

NIIIICEEE!!! One thing I love about racing masters is that there is a whole lot less of the argy bargy bs going on...old guys seem to respect the idea of being upright at the finish.
I really enjoyed racing with you guys at CC you've got a class act as a team and some firepower to back it up.

In between hospital visits, family stuff and travel I snuck in some crit racing this weekend. Saturday at Folsom I rode with the surprisingly steady Cat 5 race (might have been the talking to before hand and the "no yelling that's my job" rule I implemented) doing the mentoring gig.
Hung around for several hours and jumped in on the 45 1/4. Ended up starting the winning break which was me, 3 guys from one team, two guys from another, and a solo guy who was struggling. Not a lot of percentage in attacking being so outnumbered and with a headwind finish, I picked up a prime and took third on the throw.
Followed it up with the 35 1/4 which had Gerlach and the Canadian Nats champ in it. Nice motor pacing session. At one point they were off in a break that had all the players in it so I threw down a painful bridge and we had a nice gap which went away when three guys started arguing with each other. Did a few hard pulls, got to the front of the race with 1 to go and pulled out to avoid any carnage (had a big wreck on the straight with 4 to go and it was getting a bit argy bargy).
Long season, and I got bigger goals.
Total for the day was 4 hours at 250 NP. 305 for the 45+ and 265 for the 35+.
Did the mentoring gig in the 5's and 35 4/5 races the following day and with a 4AM flight the next morning passed on hanging around till the afternoon big boy stuff. Still managed a decent TSS giving advice to guys wobbling OTB then TT'ng back on.

Wow, that's some good time/racing density there. Nice work. I hope the hospital visits are going the right direction

There's a slow motion vid of the finish. Nice throw for 3rd!

You put on a good show! This was just after my race and I recognized the Joe's Pro kit and Ridley w/Tokens. I thought to myself Ex will attack any time now and the announcer's will be miffed that he's from Texas. Pretty much happened on que.

Did two races today at Belterra, great course for me with one longish climb and an uphill finish.
35+ 4/5 5th, a guy pulled a WR at 1100m and solo'd for the win...I stupidly was first through the last corner and was under geared...got pipped at the line ended up 5th.
Hour later Cat 4:
This race was faster but it was easier for me for some reason. Had good position going into the last corner but the guy in front of me f'd up his exit and I had to hit the brakes. Recovered and unloaded the tank for 6th...another 10m and I'd had 3rd, 3-6 were at the line and I was closing fast. I'm still a few points short of my upgrade but today was a great day on the bike, beat a lot of much younger guys and had an absolute blast today.
