Hallelujah, back at The Driveway. Started out with the 3/4. Course was all good except for a tricky turn a bit after coming up the corkscrew. It was new to me and I don't think I figured it out. But, I used some BF wisdom in that after a few laps I spotted someone who looked to me like he was navigating it well -- cbip -- so, I got on his wheel for several laps
On the first prime, I went with the leaders, but didn't go for the win because I wanted to hang in for the whole race. I recovered reasonably well. And, the climb and the slow down and follow up acceleration coming out of that tricky turn was not breaking me down. No doubt in my mind that some of the recent interval work was helping. Thanks to all for sharing your interval workouts and for the bdc/wr sticky on various workouts. I've taken some stuff from there and improvised a bit too.
Back to the race. Hung back in prime two. Glad that I did. 5 to go, and I start thinking about where I want to be with 2 to go. I work my way up, recognizing some slow wheels and going by them. At 2 to go I thought folks might get antsy and I thought someone might try to break. Nope.
1 to go, through that tricky turn, mind now focused on putting down power, and prepping for field sprint. I trust myself from 500 out. 500 out and I'm not the only one jumping there Someone got a sweet jump. I stand and hammer, sit and hammer, stand a little, sit again, 100 to go, must stand. Not gonna win, probably not gonna top 5, but as I'd been doing from 500 out, grind and don't quit.
Aside from the winner who had a couple of bike lengths, the pack was tight and spirited. I came in 12th. I was in the end game. Best finish in 3/4 at Driveway for me and I was within spitting distance of a top 5. Feels good.
I quickly filled my water bottle and jumped into the 4/5. Off the bat someone swerved into me. Then, on lap 3 or 4, a crash happened next to me coming up the corkscrew. I'm going home with a good feeling about the night -- done and focused on cheering for team!!
Now having my double (with everything and pickles, onions and jalapeņo, and hold the special sauce) and choco shake at P. Terry's

Quite a drive for 5 mass start "credits" towards your 4's upgrade - but given how long it took me to get my 10 USAC starts (too long) it's not altogether a bad idea, if you have time and gas to burn, and can't wait to be a 4.
How new are you to group riding/racing?
Another option is just do your 10 USAC starts, and come out to Thursdays @ Seward Park 5:30 pm race (4/5's) or PIR in Kent on Tuesdays - they don't count towards upgrades but are great training before doing the 'real thing.'

I don't have any group riding experience so I figured the clinic would be a good intro. I've been riding since last summer and throughout the year when I have some free time from school.
How long are there going to be rides at Seward? I live in U-district so that seems like a good option

Race report from today's Seward Park 3/4's training race - nice turnout around 50 people, got 7th or 8th, not sure. Tried to go for prime but didn't realize people were already up the road..
We went clock-wise today, which is a 4-5% grade uphill sprint that I do well on - you can come around the left side of the road and really shoot around a bunch of people there when they slow down on the uphill, but I ran out of room. During the race mostly just watched our team's Cat 3's and what they were doing, they're actually decently organized - I just tried to stay out of the way for the most part.
Series points only go to top 6, so there was no point in going for a better spot once the field sprint played out. 4 Recyled Cycles team mates in the top 10, not bad!
Great weather, great race.

I'd say,
1. find a group ride, do a group ride consistently.
2. Come out to Seward Park consistently and take the intro thingy once, then stick around and watch the later races to pick up what the other guys are doing
3. Watch cdr's videos here, (seriously, go watch all of them, it'll do you a heap of good)
4. Work on your handling and being comfortable around other cyclists
5. Hook MattM and I up for saving you the gas money
Just get your races in, there are going to be a lot of crits coming up here soon, check the race calendar and go to the local ones. You will save money and get a lot more experience.
If you want to hear what you would have heard at the upgrade clinic I can tell you what they would have told you, and MattM can tell you how to consistently get top 10s while coasting (that's true skills)
Look us up at the weekend races, or MattM at Seward Park.

late with the report, but i am too busy enjoying this racing stuff.
4/17 Flatlandia Kermesse (Midwestern Style) Road Race. CAT 5. 45 miles. Same race Slim and tspek mentioned a couple pages back.
flat, very windy with three sections of county gravel.
poor positioning when we hit the first section of gravel had me in the back 1/3rd. got gapped when riders started slow motion falling over and could never catch that lead group. seems eveyone went into survival mode at that point. finished with a teamate and one other rider for 9th out of 50 starters. tough race, but oh so fun.
full report is HERE. later.

MattM and Hida - do you guys know of any fast weekday rides around here? I've got a few groups of triathletes that I ride with for longer rides, but I haven't been able to find the you-will-get-dropped rides. Is it just the local teams?

Nice racing BG. Yep the 3/4 was a disapointment. I had the chance to move up with 2 to go but didnt and coming out of the far turn on the last lap I was sitting almost on the back. I started my sprint from there, maybe 600 meters. I passed a lot of guys and closed on the leaders but I ran out of track before I could catch them. I have got to be more agressive and get my ass up front on the last couple of laps. Next week I will make it happen. I really am not sure who can stay with me for 600 meters out there. There are some fast guys for 100-200 but I have not seen anyone yet stay with me for the whole back stretch section. 3 times I have come off the back of the group at the far turn and each time I have almost caught the top ten guys.
The 4/5 crash made me sit up and say "I don't think so", I saw the guy on the first lap hook bars, man that was close!

Fwiw I never did the 'fast group ride' thing as prep for racing - and the best fast group around here I know of is the one at Seward Park on Thursdays, e.g. the training race. Besides that I train solo.
Although in the pre/early season there's the "Rocket Ride" - a few ex-pros (Herriot, etc) and big cat 1's do some kind of painful truly hard ride, that will most likely drop you. I want to try that one next year for sure. (Jan-Feb I think)

Thanks!! It feels good to have some form starting to come around.
As I said to you after the 3/4 race, you were riding super confident and relaxed (it was looking so effortless for you) and you were finding great lines (that's why I grabbed your wheel). Check out the 4/5 results. You might be surprised to see who is in the top 5
There was one JPB rider in the 3/4 last night. If y'all are doing Austin tri tomorrow, maybe I'll get up early and submit myself to the pain.
Always the wise philosopher
Good job, see ya next time!

First race of my season in Trenton today 4/5 crit 1 mile + a little bit, 20 laps.
Last year was my "recon" year make sure racing was something I wanted to do and check out the different types so I started 3 races last year. !st race I crashed 80 seconds in and bike was unridable, I then injured my ankle, got married, and bought a house (which ends up taking a toll on training). 2nd race I was dropped but with a group of guys which made it good training pulled before last lap. 3rd race was at the end of the season 4/5 RR and I finished 16th out of 50+, this was a huge boost for my self esteem and a good way to end the year.
So onto this race (my fourth ever)...I got there 45 min ahead of time get my number and all that and start riding the course. I quickly realize that there is a small bump and a mini descent. Things I am not used to from further south (where it is very very flat). My self identified weaknesses going in were cornering and riding uphill ( I am 205lbs so I know I suck at cornering and just kinda assumed on the "up" stuff). We start off and I quickly add to my list of weaknesses descending. WTF I am the fat dude I should be good at going down, but the downhill was curvy which goes to my other weakness of cornering so I was losing positions pretty quick.
A few breaks went early, some were brought back, not sure about all, about midway through I realized the only place I was making up positions was on the short uphill before the line. This made no sense to me but the pack slowed way down on the lead up to the "bump" to prepare so I was always semi-fresh for it and managed to get to the front (top10) a few times. Somewhere around halfway I thought "wow I thought I was fit enough to do a 4/5 crit, I think I am gonna die". But then I started focusing more on the downhill section and taking better lines. I realized I applied the brakes about the same time the more skilled guys did, but I was holding onto them a bit longer which was killing me.
Then the noob mistake hit.
I finally resigned myself to the fact that I was not in fact going to die or get dropped with about 3-4 to go, and was quite pleased with myself. We pass the tent/line and the card reads "1". I took this to mean there was one lap to go...apparently there is a "0 to go" condition, which now makes a lot of sense to me, but at the time I never entertained the notion. (there was no bell for some reason no primes I notice either, but maybe the breaks took them). So I get to the front 6-8 guys do the downhill really quite well. Resign myself to the fact that some guys are gonna pass me on the uphill finish, but I would kinda do well by default since I pushed so hard to get up front. So everyone goes up the hill quiet quick charging to the "0" marker.......and keep going, needless to say I had put a fair amount into the uphill section, and was basically out of gas. I desperately clung to the back, but seeing as how this was the real last lap they were now going all out on the backstretch and really hitting the hill. I and about 3-4 guys get dropped at the very end and I finish about 20ish seconds behind the pack (I kinda coasted in once I realized my situation It was about an 8 sec gap before I turned off)
2 guys crashed at the very end, one looked mostly fine, the other was screaming obscene words so he was pretty hurt, but still very vocal. It was a pretty good learning experience and 4 down 6 to go
here is my 305 data I can't believe my average HR was 177 for 56 min. other 4/5 crits seemed much shorter.

Judge Clark Crit in Louisville KY. 4/5 field 30-40 guys, very wet course. Got in a few breaks that were brought back, attacked with half a lap to go, got caught at the finish line, finished 7th. Oh well, gave it a shot.

Turtle Pond CR in Loudon, NH. Cat 3. 60ish guys?
5x11miles. 57 total. 1x4' climb per lap.
short version.
I got in 11 man break 4 miles in.
we stayed away for the remaining 53 miles as many in the break had team support. My teammie rocked it for me in the pack.
I launched @ 500m to go. Got caught and hung on to sprint for 5th. $40.
Good day.
