Driveway M35+: teammate J: 2nd Me: 4th

We decided to skip the whole kilo thing and just rotate attacks until one of us died or one stuck. It was just the two of us. The B&S team had 7.

J goes from the gun, channeling his inner RX. Cbip follows him almost immediately. Good team representation that way and I don't have to worry so much about him being chased down.

I prepared myself to counter when he got caught. After a couple laps, Cbip's teammate bridges and tags Cbip out so he can come back to the pack. They're about 10s off the front.

The bridge attempts start coming, and I'm covering about half of them, B&S covering the other half.

At one point, the break was w/in 5", but nobody could quite finish it off, so B&S and I go to the front and ride tempo at 22mph.

Pretty soon, J and partner are 25" up. 2 to go. 30" up. On the last lap, things heated up a bit. I picked the right wheels, but couldn't beat PJR in the sprint (I never can). He won the P123 tonight, so I feel ok finishing half a wheel behind him.

J didn't have the fire to attack his break partner and didn't attack him at all. 2nd for that, but it's respectable I guess. I say pull out the knives on the last lap, but I think J was just happy to see his season turning around. Great ride on his part.

I was sitting on 350W NP for the middle half-hour covering attacks. That was some hard riding -- a couple of those guys were killing me, just in their draft. I never let one go though.

Great night. First top 5 of the year for me

Got paid.

5:30 start time, 5:00 was supposed to be some newbie orientation. Got there about 5:15, filled out some waiver and then got my rented number which I clumsily pinned onto my jersey. Asked if there was some orientation, but apparently they weren't holding it that night, but the lady said I could go check out the course. So I did a loop around the course, and when I got back some nice guy started giving me some advice as I went around a second time (he must have noticed I was some noob). He told me to slow down since he didn't want to use up too much energy (understandable). Checked my phone and it was only 5:23, so should be no problem. He's telling me various things as we're moving along the course. I see up the distance a group of riders take off (which looks odd since so many were in it). I thought maybe they were checking out the course too. I asked the guy what that big group was leaving. "Hmm, I think that was your race." Damn, I'm thinking. Seems like they started the race a bit early, because my first lap through the course didn't take long at all. Anyway, I take off thinking I might as well try my best.

So I start huffing it seeing if I can catch up with the peloton, which I can't even see. So I'm basically TT'ing, and a couple laps later I pass a couple of stragglers that must have dropped off. I start seeing the end of the peloton around the same corner each time through the laps, then stop seeing them. I can tell I'm slowing down. Inevitably, the peloton catches up to me after maybe 6 laps. I move out of the way so I don't slow anyone down. I thought I was supposed to get off the course or something, but some guy tells me to keep pedaling, so I figure I'm supposed to keep going just to get practice. So I sprint back to the peloton and go around a few laps with the peloton until I hear a bell. I figure that means last lap. I go pretty hard that lap, but notice people keep going around. I guess the bell meant 3 more laps, lol. Anyway, I fall off the peloton during the last lap. I head back to my car kinda dissapointed and a bit embarassed, but remind myself that I probably fried myself during those first 6 laps TT'ing by myself.

Anyway, I don't know if I can say it was particularly fun, but for some reason I think I want to try again..
Wow, bummer.. this really is a newbie-unfriendly sport.
- They are not supposed to start early. But sometimes they do, especially in casual midweek races. Since I'm paranoid (developed after years of racing) I always find the chief ref and ask for the official race time so I can match my clock to theirs.
- You are allowed to ride with any riders/pack that you have lapped or that have lapped you. so when you see 'em coming, get ready to accelerate. Good job on staying out of the way as they passed, that's good etiquette.
- The bell is rung for prime laps as well as for 1 lap to go. "Prime" = a prize within the race for the first rider across the line on the next lap. Could be a bag of pasta, a coupon, or $. usually announced in advance or at the start line but rarely will they say which lap in advance.
- Watch where the officials stand near the finish line, look for numbered cards that count down the laps remaining. Or at a casual race, the guy may just hold up fingers and shout "five to go" or whatever.

Just keep coming back, there's a reason cat 5's are required to start 10 races before becoming 4's - it's a learning curve.

/ edit: also get there earlier, give yourself more time for a proper warmup; criteriums start fast.

Did the Seward Park 1/2/3's race instead of the 3/4's race since I was running late. Hung on, for the whole hour, the first 15 were the toughest. Ended up 25th or so, success.

Where the 3/4's pack would get bunched up at the bottom of the hill, this race would have us strung out the whole way down and then some. Group of 6 got off the front and stayed out the whole time, I actually tried to bridge up with some other guys (one is ex-pro no less), but he was being covered by another team and gave up, and I in turn gave up. It hurt good.

Having a four-digit race number (compared to #1 on the ex-pro) made me feel a little conspicuous but it all worked out. Definitely a better way to spend $10 than the 3/4's race..

Yeah, I'm the guy who rode around the course with you.
The race left a few minutes early by my clock (I had 5:28 when we hit the top of the hill), and I called to you to stop and wait for them to come around again, but I guess you didn't hear me.
Anyhow, this is a training race, so even if you get dropped you can wait around till the pack comes back by and jump back in. (I did this a few times when I started racing)... there's no way you or I or most anyone else would catch the pack solo if you had a 45" gap to make up from the start and still live through the rest of the race... the math just doesn't work out.

I was actually riding that race myself, and so I toodled around the course until they came by and I jumped in... as easy as that. (You went off like a shot as I was trying to explain that... you can get it next time)

You did just fine, I looked for you a couple of times when I was moving through the pack... come back next week and hit me up for some gels or something since I screwed you over. I'm super sorry about that.

Anyhow - for my report,
I rode for an hour, got to the race, decided to do two, did the early race and the 3/4s race, did way better than I anticipated in both, am looking forward to this weekend.

No worries bro, not your fault. I was just looking to get some experience in a race, which I did. It's not like I was going to win anything anyway Thanks for showing me around the course, that actually put me at ease more than anything. Yeah I had no idea what to do when we found out it was the race that started. I didn't really hear anything after that as I went into "race mode", lol. It's nice to know you can jump back into the pack if you get lapped, etc.

Good to hear you did well. Redmond Derby Crit this weekend or something for you? Anyway, I should see you around Seward again sometime hopefully.

experience is the important part, keep coming back - you are plenty strong... time to work on finesse and you will do well.
Yeah, I'll be at Redmond - you should come out... may as well get the experience now, it'll be the same no matter when you do it, so there's no sense in waiting to get it (IMO)

everybody gets worked over a bit when you start, it's perfectly normal.
Hit me up next time and I'll give you the secret insider's guide to number-pinning.

That was some great racing last night for sure. Tactically it was about perfect for us except the guy from Cumberland University just never stopped trying to bridge across. He must have attacked 20 times, impressive! Nice job on the front working with us to control the race once it got established, glad you got a good finish out of it.

The number of pins is kind of a joke. 5 is usually fine, even 4. I'm using 15-16 pins now, and, yes, it's my own little inside joke to myself.

I wasn't even referring to that - brbbiking hadn't ever pinned a number on before, so it was less than "Pro" level when he did it in 45" last night.
No worries, just one of the things to learn... that said, now you've turned him onto the font of knowledge that is your blog - so he'll be helasmart next time I see him.

Thanks. Team racing is so much more fun. That Cumberland guy was really really strong. Dying in his draft -- felt much like when Benz just goes over and over again -- kills me.

Sweet!!!!!!!! Very happy for ya.

Depending on how often you race, I see a W on the near horizon. And, you will have PJR, although, he is racing like a beast.

Nicely done!! I tend to enjoy more (and ride better) in 1-4/1-3 than in 3-4 races. You might find the same thing.

We arrived back Tuesday night. I can now sense that I rode pretty hard for the 10 straight days in some hills of Normandy (including part of Paris-Camembert Lepetit and some of its notable climbs) as I am now riding in a recovery mode. Riding in the countryside was terrific and it was beautiful scenery. I rarely take note of the scenery around me, but, I could not ignore it as it was serene and ubiquitous. And, when riding along with fields of wheat/corn/etc on each side, or valleys below, and the incredible greenery/gardens/farms or interesting houses on narrow roads (and very little traffic), it makes for a great riding experience -- never thought I would say something like that!!

Attleboro, MA 35+ crit. My third race as a 4, and picked the age group rather than the cat 4 since the weather looked dicey for the later cat 4 race. A little nervous since I am a decided non-sprinter (crits not my thing) and get very limited pack riding these days...the announcer saying this was going to be the fastest race of the day didn't help with the nerves much either.

5 corner, 1km lap with a small hill up one side and matching small descent on the other side. some bumpy surfaces.

Started off pretty fast....mostly strung out...pleased to see I wasnt' DFL, but still getting a bit accordioned in the turns. After about 15 laps pace seemed to settle a bit and then a series of primes meant there were some bumps and starts in the pace. I noticed I was able to move up OK on the rise, so figures I would try and get up to the front going into the last few laps and see what happened.

Just as I was making my move on the inside, pack slows a bit, and I find myself OTF with a couple other guys. Short lived, only a lasted a lap, but gave me interest in another shot...pack didn't slow though, so no dice for someone without a good turn of speed...pack finish.

35K with average speed of 42.6kph....satisfied....still need to work on speed.

next up, Hilltowns.

And, when riding along with fields of wheat/corn/etc on each side, or valleys below, and the incredible greenery/gardens/farms or interesting houses on narrow roads (and very little traffic), it makes for a great riding experience -- never thought I would say something like that!!
That sounds like a great trip. One you'll remember for years.

First stage of the Tour de Bozeman was today. Out and back TT.

I missed my start time by 45 seconds. Ugh. Managed to come in 7th out of 42, but it could have been at least 3rd. The worst part is that I had my best TT to date.

I'm 1:30 down on first with two stages left. The RR on Sunday suits me and I'll just have to let it all hang out and see what happens.
