The crit was awesome for me. I doubt you watched the cat 5 crit but if you did you saw me take the "safest way to get through the corners is to go first" approach. I strung'em out for the first 5 laps then settled back into the front of the pack. In the 5's I realized that most don't know how to corner without losing momentum. I never once got out of my saddle and always gained ground on the corners....but I had a lapse in quick thinking coming out of the final corner and allowed myself to get pinched between 3 inside guys moving out and 1 outside guy moving in...I honestly KNOW I would have been top 3 cause I had so much punch left and was accelerating perfectly but I got a wheel and hit the deck pretty hard on my right hip. couldn't walk. couldn't race the RR (which I had looked 4ward to so much) and went home.
Just got back from the Doc...x-rays negative, crutches for a week then fast track back.

I got a few shots & videos from the race, posted on flickr.
Shot of the sketchy corner #2 - diving into it from the downhill was pretty fun, but the noises bikes/wheels were making were atrocious:
Sucks about missing the RR too, it was pretty epic, too epic for me this year anyway!

I don't want to make to big a deal of it. not for a masters 4 race. And it wasn't just them messing up the rotation. There were a decent cadre of guys from various teams putting in an honest effort, but the chase looses steam when guys don't pull through or hold the wheels. Anyways I just looked at the USAC results....they pretty much DNP'd everyone not in the top 15 in most of the races.

ok heres my sunday race report:
Deer Trail Road Race - Deer Trail, CO
SM4
Deer Trail is one of the big longer open road races in the colorado season. The short course is 42 miles and the long course (p-1-2) is 70ish. Its way out on the rolling plains of east colorado, not the most scenic course, consisting of a couple of out and backs: the 4s do an out and back on road A, the a 90 degree turn, and an out and back on road B, then another 90 degrees back onto road A for another out and the finish is halfway back to the intersection again. the roads are straight as a board, but never flat. lots of rollers, nothing long but not a flat meter on the whole course. and these were all 2 lane country roads and the turnarounds were all basically just cones in the road. very tight for an big field which the 4s was.
The Cat4 field was sold out, 80 strong. almost evryone from the Sunshine hill climb in boulder the previous day was here as well.
When i first got into town, the first person i saw was Ze, who had flatted out of the break in the p12 race, and warned me it was killer windy and if any breaks went off with more tha 5 people, to make sure i was in them. noted. Next I ran into a couple of his teammates, another of whom also flatted and the other got 4th, they warned me.. be in the top 5 at every turnaround or youre screwed.
I changed and got the bike ready to go and found a frontage road leading out of town that looked good for warming up, i had a tailwind on the way out and was cruisin at like 30mph for about 20 minutes, then decided i didnt wanna cut it to close so i turned around and battled a pretty fierce headwind back into town. glad i did though as it got me mentally psyched for the wind on the course.
got to the line pretty early and secured a good spot in the front row and just concentrated on breathing and relaxing and visualizing... we went out neutral for about a mile before we hit the course and the pace was comfortable but picking up. Many of the strong 4s were up front as well as a kid in the kit of a local junior team, who i later learned was 16, riding smoothly but pretty agressively.
the wind was pretty intense, crosswind from the left, and i was fixating on Ze's advice about watching for a move. there were a couple of little surges, but nothing committed, and then suddenly the 16 year old went pretty hard, and looked good. everyone i would have expected to be in a break was upfront, so i thought, what the hell, if i jump maybe someone else will join us.
but no one did.
couple of minutes later, he and i are all alone, and i realize we're gaining ground, so i turn to the kid and say "alright lets do this" and start pushing really really hard.
we come up to the first turnaround and cut it tight, easy to get through with just two people, i tell him to focus on the places we can make time, tailwind, turnarounds, etc... we;re still on the first leg, which is also the same road as the finish leg (3rd leg) and we pass the 1K sign... he asks if thats the finish.
i realize the kid doesnt know the course and we're in trouble.
uh, weve got like an hour and half left.
"really?"
there is panic in his voice.
he falters a couple of times on couple of little climbs and makes a giant effort to catch me, when he does i tell him to tuck in beside me and rest for a while, i feel fine.
the next two hills the kid pops both times, and both times i slow a little for him, drag him for a little while then yell at him to work harder and draft tighter and take shorter pulls... he's crumbling.
by now i've accepted that this was probably a dumb move, so i figure i'll just stay as long as i can, and when i get caught i'll hide out for a while and try to recover for the end of the race. better to try some moves and fail that have a 2 hour group ride and then a sprint, right?
the next hill, he pops, and i look back and see the pack closing in on us, but up ahead of me i can see the 2nd (of 3) turnarounds, and i convince myself that if i can make it to the turnaround, i get several miles of tailwind. so i drop the kid to get eaten up by the pack. sorry buddy, valiant effort, though. next time read the course profile.
i'm out in the wind, killin myself to get to the turnaround before i get swallowed up but its not gonna happen. the leader passes me, but instead of tucking into the pack , i see that the pace looks ok up front, and i figure if i can make it through the turnaround in the front part of the group i might still be in the game, withthe tailwind coming. so i jump on the third wheel as it passes me. and somehow after an hour out in the wind, my legs feel ok and i'm still in the game, sweet.
i hit the turnaround top 5, the pace heats up, but i keep finding good wheels and stay up front and out of the red. the second hour was easier but also more nerve wracking. surges and jostling and several dead end break attemps later, we're back on the first leg again, and the pace dives.... we're going into the wind and we're not getting organized and no one wants to work and its suddenly crawling. me and a couple of other guys try to give the stronger guys an echelon lesson, it never really comes together, but after a short respite the tempo picks up again, as people start to jockey for position at the turnaround.
i go through top 10 again, and we start flying back to the finish. through all of this theres still about 30 people hanging on, with about 10 of us doing most of the work up front. but cuz of the wind, we havent been able to shake the other 20. the pace drops again for a moment, then starts to really wind up as we pass 1k. a couple of dudes go early and fade, so we're down to 8, and i'm sitting about 5th. then someone goes for real, and its on, and my legs go "yeah i dont think so". deep throbbing calf cramp, and my quads are toast... so i grab the first wheel i can and follow him in for 8th.
i havent really trained my sprint much this year anyway, as most of my priority races are hill climbs so i've been working on muscular endurance and edurance, so at the end of the day, while i'm the first one to admit that a 2 man break, a mile into a 40 mile race in the wind wasnt the smartest move, i'm not sure it made much difference. and it was fun as hell. i probably wouldnt do it again. and i will be racing more conservatively next weekend, but it was a sucessful first road race.

badhat - I love it. Great effort and, from what I've read, great improvement. Well done!! Sorry about the dude with insufficient course knowledge -- wow, there's a good lesson there, but, how in the world can you check for that? What you went through while away has to pay dividends in confidence and knowledge about what you can do.

yeah this has been a really great early first season of racing for me.
its mostly a testament to the power of following a good periodization plan. i've followed friel with some discipline so far, wrote out a full season plan with 3 peaks, and rest weekd and builds and have followed it pretty closely.
the bit of luck came when this race (deer trail) was postponed due to weather and went from a C race to being in the middle of my first A block. i wasnt expecting to be competitive in road races when i started, preferring HCs, and planning around them. as it turns out the RR was my best result this season so far, and the race i felt most confident with.
i can say without a doubt that riding with Ze and other local big dogs here every week has been the best road race practice i could ask for. i felt like an old vet sunday, and it was my first licensed long road race.
also it looks like i'm ranked 6th in the cat 4 ACA Best Allaround Rider rankings now. heh.
Ze, weather permitting i'll be riding on wednesday night but it looks like the powers that be might be postponing Lee's to thursday due to weather. i wont ride hard on thursday, friel says i'm not allowed to. but i might do worlds, its always nice toget humbled a little when things start goin too well

I'll bite. I was in the 3/4 race.
First lap - nothing special.
End of 2nd lap - pushed the pace and got in a dozen-man split. Every team was there, definitely, and I was one of the few riders without teammates. People chased anyway.
3rd lap - More aggressive riding from me for nothing, got tired pushing the pace and even leading a small group through the dirt. Couldn't get away without a good amount of splintering and then guys either getting lazy or swarming. Not the right mix.
4th lap - A bit tired from 3rd lap, a three-man break slips away. I watched it from arears, and nobody on my team reacted. We were all pooped from some mid-race action.
5th lap - Teammates and I talk. None of us is feeling 100%, so we decide not to waste energy with the chase - the entire peloton seemed to feel the same with the break well over a minute up the road. Two teams with guys up the road were blocking effectively. As some point, the original R1V guy in the break came back, and a GamJams rider tried to bridge but ended up in no-man's land.
For the sprint, we took the false flat by the feed zone quick and my team was positioned excellently about 5-6 back. I had to fight the wind up on the left, stayed on the left through the turn anticipating a swarm. That helped, because Coppi road-blocked the front instead of gunning it. When things accelerated, I had a nice gap open to my right, I took it, and flew up the right side past the entire group well early (400m). At the 200m sign I looked back to see one guy on my wheel but I was able to stay ahead of him for 4th, taking the field sprint.
Sucked to miss the break, but it's always fun to "win" a sprint.

Didn't feel like finishing tonight's training race in a bunch sprint, so I tried a kilo attack. Managed to get a small gap on the field. Unfortunately, two guys tagged on my wheel, and both of them pulled around me at the line. 3rd.
Managed to set a new 1 minute power record though.

timster - nice.
i did the "A" race, finished 4th. not bad.
i nearly crashed early on. i was 3rd wheel, the guy in front of me stood to attack, I was on it immediately, only my jump was bigger than his and like a noob idiot i accelerated straight into his wheel. after a big front wheel buckle i somehow didnt fall down and was in the ditch, luckily nothing was in my way so i just rode out of it and sprinted back to the pack. very sloppy on my part initially followed by some good bike handling. close call.

Seward Park 3/4's training crit, 20th-30th, not sure. Sat up for the field sprint since I was too far back anyway. Went for the first prime, came kinda close but couldn't hold it. Sat on the front for a while, bridged up to a 4-6 guy break, though we got caught. Good times.
NP higher than usual for this race, might even need to up the FTP estimate soon.

5th last night in the 1/2/3 crit. Half a dozen tries finally got me in a break that worked; thought I might make it to the finish in a two man attack when the lap cards came up but got caught on the last lap and just missed the train when it came by. Kept sprinting hoping for some implosions but finished a couple of feet behind 1-4.
Best peak wattage of the year on one of my attacks. Track for the next 3 days. Gonna enter the geezer classes and hopefully shake off this "W" drought I've had going for the last couple of months.

Practice crit last night. Flat course, raced 'C' group (4-5). Pretty small group. Nobody wanted to push the pace at the front. Sprinted away on a prime lap to take the clif bar and a young rider came with me, and we worked together for a couple laps until we both ran out of gas and got caught by the field.
A solo break went away with 2 laps to go, and again, nobody wanted to go after him. I sat in the back for a bit, then got tired of seeing the guy ride away from us and pulled the field back to him on the last lap. Needless to say this killed my chances at the win, but I still had fun and hung in for 5th.

Making a kilometer blurry
5th last night in the 1/2/3 crit. Half a dozen tries finally got me in a break that worked; thought I might make it to the finish in a two man attack when the lap cards came up but got caught on the last lap and just missed the train when it came by. Kept sprinting hoping for some implosions but finished a couple of feet behind 1-4.
