Henleyville Road Race
Cat 4
72 miles
Result: 1st
Smaller field, threat of rain, end of season and Henleyville is far from the Bay Area. Decided I would cover all moves by Chico Corsa because they had the numbers. One of their guys went off the front 10 miles in and I covered. I figured it was too early, but I went anyways. My teammate wasn't gonna chase nor was Chico so we got a sizable gap. With about 40-45 miles to go he cracked and I was left to solo. I didn't think I was gonna be able to hold for 40+miles solo but I was invested so I kept going. I kept my wattage around 250-280 watts (I usually set my garmin to show watts and distance only) and I tried to block out the pain and negative thoughts. I think the mental part was as hard as the physical part. I was still making 280 watts in the final kms. There is no way I could have done that without the power meter to pace my effort
I had built a decent advantage so I was able to enjoy the final km. I zipped up my jersey, straightened it, put my glasses in the helmet vents, wiped the cytomax of my face, etc.
It was my first win ever and even though there are a few races left, I'm ending my season with a win.
Entire workout (238 watts):
Duration: 3:14:47
Work: 2776 kJ
TSS: 237.5 (intensity factor 0.857)
Norm Power: 249
VI: 1.04
Pw:HR: 6.71%
Pa:HR: 11.62%
Distance: 72.026 mi
Elevation Gain: 791 ft
Elevation Loss: 799 ft
Grade: -0.0 % (-9 ft)
Min Max Avg
Power: 0 721 238 watts
Heart Rate: 126 183 168 bpm
Cadence: 20 119 93 rpm
Speed: 0 40 22.1 mph
Pace 1:30 0:00 2:43 min/mi
Altitude: 301 514 374 ft
Crank Torque: 0 771 218 lb-in

hey yup that is me. sorry i don't know who you are - who do you ride for again?
yeah it was pretty nuts with all those people. i was moving around a lot but just blowing tons of energy out of the saddle after every corner. did most of the group end up staying together until the sprint?
there is another crit in rockleigh next week - should be much nicer. also prospect park 10/3 . i have never been to prospect park though.

You don't know me I ride for Pure Energy.
I was also burning tons of wasted energy sprinting out of each corner. It was frustrating trying to make up positions only to have overeager guys divebombing the inside of the corners and slowing everyone down. The front group did stay together until the end... we caught the breakaway on the last lap and the field sprint was chaos.
I hear the Rockleigh course is very tight... not sure if I can make it or family stuff will intervene. Prospect park is a fun course, you should check it out.

I'd like to. I still need 9-10 points. I'm a terrible sprinter (850W)/so-so climber (19:50 OLH) so I have to earn points the hard way - breakaways that are usually doomed to failure.
And thanks everyone. 27 races this year and probably moving to Cat 3 to be pack fodder by next year so I was really looking at the possibility of never winning a race. I might never get that chance again so I'm gonna appreciate it.

Rockleigh is probably a bit wider than half of the street at Fair haven and it won't be so many people, and the turns are pretty wide and part of it is newly repaved. it is a nice course.
can you tell me what prospect park is like?

cool. i was right there at the front until the sprint, i just had no idea who we lost many or any of the 95 people.

Portsmouth CAT 4 Report
Well I flew back to New Hampshire last week and raced the Smuttynose Brewery crit. Here is my report:
Course: 4 corner right-turn crit through the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Portsmouth is the quintessential New England harbor town and it was quite beautiful. Anyway, turn 1 had a pothole by a sewer grate. Those who went wide were met by a hay bale sticking off the sidewalk. Turn two had 2 levels of pavement (middle of repaving). Turn 3 was maybe 8 feet wide. Turn 4 was fine. Course had a slightly uphill finish.
The start: So they had the course open for about 30 minutes prior t the race for warm-up. This was cool as it allowed us to check it out, take a few laps, etc... Well, About 5 minutes from start I pass the Start/Finish and there's maybe 3 or 4 guys lined up. Next time i see the start again everyone is lined up. I was the last to the line (so much for me arriving 3 hours early for good starting position). I knew quickly this was no good as there wasn't a ton of room to advance. They also did a very strange thing that i hadn't experienced at a CAT4 race in CA - they let the "home team" start up front. There were maybe 12-15 of them so they all got a good starting position. This become important to note later.
The race: Whistle blew and we were off. There were maybe 60 or so racers. Now, remember how I said the home team had starting advantage? This is what I think happened. The race was stupid fast. Like a BGP type pace. Dudes getting shelled left and right. My theory is that the home team guys were each taking 1 lap pulls for those first 12-15 laps to keep the pace up. It's still not an excuse for me, but I began to notice after each lap one of them would "fall back" and I think severaly were pulled by the end. Anyway, I just hung with the pack and enjoyed the pain train. We had a crash in turn 3 about 4 laps in - clipped pedal. Then with about 5 to go in turn two a rider went wide right to avoid the pothole and met mr. hay bale. He bounced across the course and took out about 4 guys. I noticed the racing seemed to ease a bit during the crashes - maybe a sign of sportsmanship? I ended up with a pack finish.
In conclusion: I was the only LGr there (obviously) and had a great time. The weather was 70 and sunny. Race was stupid fast. Oh, they had Portsmouth Criterium pint glasses for sale too. I took a pic but can't find it.
Cheers

Had a great last race of the season today. We got our two protected people into the break early, so my job was to chase down attacks and either keep others from reeling them in or bridge up by sitting on wheels. We were able to control the race, and I was completely on everything that moved and felt great. At one point I got way off the front for a while with one girl and when she motioned for me to pull through I just smiled and told her I had 2 teammates in the break and wasn't going to work.
I screwed up the leadout/field sprint and managed to both be unhelpful to the rest of my teammates and finish not all that great (7th in the sprint for 12th overall) but it was a super fun race, my teammates took 1st, 5th, and 7th and we won the overall team competition for the series.

Did my 2nd crit ever yesterday. It's was a flat 1/2 mile, 4 right turn course. I did lead one lap then fell into the pack and struggled to keep on the back but was able to. Then the 3 guys in front of me started to fall off a little bit. We started to catch back up the the lead pack but never did. I went into turn 3 on the back of the other 3 guys but took off and went into turn 4 with a guy on my wheel. I stood and sprinted the last 100 meters and beat that guy by 2 seconds for a 10th place finish. This race was my best of the 5 total races I did this year. I never planned on bike racing this year and was just training for half marathons for the first 4 months. Next year it's all about the bike.
