Gina Kolata is in way over her head. She gets paid to write article the level you see the Bicycling or Runner's World (derisively referred to by serious runners as jogger's world), except the articles get a nice shine as as somewhat informative they are from the paper that purported prints all the news that's fit to be printed. Basically, they are geared toward the type who self-congratulate for "running" a marathon in five hours.
It was like nothing I had ever done before, and I was not having fun.

I did two hours east of Madrid in the sticks this afternoon. Good mix of flats and descents/ascents to small towns in the valleys. Why is it so much easier (perceived effort) to put out xx watts going uphill?

yep - it showed from the handlebars down of a bunch of guys racing on the track... however, 5 of the 6 guys shown happen to be TT monsters, so by dint of external knowledge I figured it was just fine.

moved my saddle forward 5mm. my knees and ankles thank me and I seem to have better power transfer. torso is a bit cramped. I'd love to try a 120 on the bike before ordering one and committing to the position.

yep. I've only watched one movie on a disc, Blu-Ray of Life of Brian. I've watched everything else streaming on my PS3. Pretty awesome. It's DVD quality and doesn't take long to buffer, very good. I only have the normal Road Runner connection, which I think is 5 Megs or something.
It stops to buffer occasionally, but it's not too annoying. Considering it's so cheap, and instant.

Nor did I know my average speed. It was like nothing I had ever done before, and I was not having fun. I kept telling myself just to keep going. I had told my friends I was riding, and I knew they would want to know how I did. I did not want to embarrass myself with a ridiculously slow time.
Finally, the race was over.
“I’m never doing that again,” I said to Bill. “I was the slowest woman.” Well, he told me, he felt sure he was the slowest man. We drove home, chastened. So much for thinking we were the fastest cyclists on the road. I was glad running is my real passion. It is not fun to feel like such a failure.
It seems that she would prefer to be passed by a bunch of people in a running race than to just pace herself. The complaint about lack of special equipment also gets no sympathy.

I think you've only touched on 2 of the 3 root causes. You cannot underplay the deliberate flooding of of the region with cheap beer. Combined with co-opted law enforcement leaning heavily on independent manufacturers of first moonshine, then ganja, then redfish for "blackened redfish", and now meth which provided one of the few economic opportunities for a semi-educated population and was a key component in religious ceremonies (cross burning, wife beating), this troika was devastating.
