Not quite a Haiku, but oddly poetic.

It keeps repeating in my head in William Shatner's voice and he's overly emphasizing BIRD. No wonder Sub went crazy.

BIRD!

Although she did get this right:

It was like nothing I had ever done before, and I was not having fun.

Watched "Touching the Void" earlier. Awesome movie. Highly recommended. It's about a climbing mishap in the Andes.

Now watching Robing Hood: Men in Tights. I've seen it before, but I'd forgotten that I'd seen it.

Sweet!

I did two hours east of Madrid in the sticks this afternoon. Good mix of flats and descents/ascents to small towns in the valleys. Why is it so much easier (perceived effort) to put out xx watts going uphill?

A picture with an earlier version of this article was published in error. It showed a group of bicyclists racing, not individual time trials.
yep - it showed from the handlebars down of a bunch of guys racing on the track... however, 5 of the 6 guys shown happen to be TT monsters, so by dint of external knowledge I figured it was just fine.

Great read. I heard an interview from the author on the Jim Rome show years ago and bought the book. Amazing story.

Read 'Into Thin Air' if you get a chance, very good as well.

BIRD!
A lot of people think "Freebird" is just about some trailer trash redneck walking out on his wife, children, and financial responsibilities so he doesn't have to hold a real job instead of selling Mexican ditch weed to the other park inhabitants. Nothing could be further from the truth. In an interview in The Atlantic just before the plane crash, Van Zant noted that it was instead a commentary on the post reconstruction loss of agricultural dominance of the southern states relative to the rest of the US, recognizing the toll this took on the collective subconscious of the region.

"Our songs combine historical metaphor, modern phrasing, and the complex structures of Baroque chamber music to form a symbiosis of the past, present and future" said Van Zant.

Given this complexity, it's little wonder that Shatner, as good as he is, couldn't do it justice.

moved my saddle forward 5mm. my knees and ankles thank me and I seem to have better power transfer. torso is a bit cramped. I'd love to try a 120 on the bike before ordering one and committing to the position.

yep. I've only watched one movie on a disc, Blu-Ray of Life of Brian. I've watched everything else streaming on my PS3. Pretty awesome. It's DVD quality and doesn't take long to buffer, very good. I only have the normal Road Runner connection, which I think is 5 Megs or something.

It stops to buffer occasionally, but it's not too annoying. Considering it's so cheap, and instant.

"To me, there's nothing freer than a bird, you know, just flying wherever he wants to go. And, I don't know, that's what this country is all about, being free. I think everyone wants to be a free bird."

We lined up according to our race numbers and set off, one by one. I was so nervous I forgot to set my bike computer, so I had no idea how far I had gone or how far I had to go. Nor did I know my average speed. It was like nothing I had ever done before, and I was not having fun. I kept telling myself just to keep going. I had told my friends I was riding, and I knew they would want to know how I did. I did not want to embarrass myself with a ridiculously slow time.

Finally, the race was over.

“I’m never doing that again,” I said to Bill. “I was the slowest woman.” Well, he told me, he felt sure he was the slowest man. We drove home, chastened. So much for thinking we were the fastest cyclists on the road. I was glad running is my real passion. It is not fun to feel like such a failure.
It seems that she would prefer to be passed by a bunch of people in a running race than to just pace herself. The complaint about lack of special equipment also gets no sympathy.

That does explain the propensity for domestic violence in the rural impoverished portions of the south. Poor audio equipment causing Free Bird to play backwards and imparting William Shatner's voice on the fragile psyche of an already despondent individual is enough to trigger a psychotic episode.

Prequel the Free Bird episode with an inadvertent playing of Neil Young's Southern Man and you have the psychological cause of murder in the south.

I think you've only touched on 2 of the 3 root causes. You cannot underplay the deliberate flooding of of the region with cheap beer. Combined with co-opted law enforcement leaning heavily on independent manufacturers of the alcoholic beverage (moonshine) which provided one of the few economic opportunities for a semi-educated population and was a key component in religious ceremonies (cross burning, wife beating), this troika was devastating.

While they experienced a brief cultural renaissance during the "Springer Era", the future holds little promise despite the relative success of "My Redneck Wedding".
