SoCal's ranked #1 for both the worst air quality and worst traffic in the USA. Those beaches are closed for weeks at a time because of high bacteria counts and it takes a day sometimes to get from there to the mountains, if you can afford the gas because it also has the highest composite taxes in the US, and horribly inflated property values. Presuming the mountains aren't on fire or sliding their way to the ocean of course.

NorCal's got far better culture and scenery than SoCal (and better surfing and skiing) but the traffic sucks there too and I got tired of getting my wallet emptied by a state that can't even get the potholes filled.

California's broken. I paid $5500 in property taxes a year when I left, the guy next door paid $450 on virtually the same house. Of course I got a lot better service at the DMV

Air pollution LA was fourth not #1 that would be Central Cal (Bakersfield) Salt Lake was pretty close up there as well. LA does have the worst traffic...but Houston and Dallas are right up there. As for overall polluted cities LA is again not the worst. Houston and Salt Lake City are worse.

South Orange County beaches and San Diego beaches are quite clean and rarely close...when they do it's more likely due to natural causes like under tow.

No doubt Cali has financial issues..that can and will be fixed. We may have had to pay more in taxes but at least I got a freakin' street cleaner every week and decent highway signs.

What prompted all of this was my comment that California is a big state...

I don't live in LA, and I don't like going to LA. Fortunately, it's nothing like LA here.

I tend to notice little things.

One thing that has stood out about Rust Belt cities is public clocks.

When I see a public clock that is either not working at all or displaying a grossly wrong time, I am usually in a Rust Belt city. Not always, but it's an indicator.

Incorrect. I used to go down there to dive quite a bit and there were weeks at a time we couldn't go out because of high bacteria counts because of sewage runoff. This comes from the Surfrider website:

"When you venture into the water, will you get sick as a result? Closed beaches due to sewer spills and the appearance of beach health advisory warning signs due to pollution from urban runoff continue to be much more too frequent".

Only when fairy dust and unicorns become the state currency, if the last 20 years are any indication. Their budgetary problems are endemic because around 90% of the state budget is pre-allocated and Prop 13 has shut down the most stable revenue stream. The Terminator couldn't fix it, and he's a Cyborg.

Which reminds me about the State's penchant for looking to mediocre actors for governance. And don't get me started on B-1 Bob and Boxer.

Considering it's the 5th largest economy in the world, I'd say those would be fairly modest expectations brother.

Hey, give me $35k a year and I'll buff your sidewalks with Lemon Pledge.
