P/1/2 racing is very different, and much better, than 3/4/5 racing. End O' story. Get the upgrade, you'll be fine. It's faster, but since guys can actually *gasp* corner their bikes, it feels very different.
Plus you get the make the oh-so-hilarious Cat 2 face in the p/1/2 races Similar to the Cat 4 Face in a fast 3/4...
My tip: look for some cat 2 only races early on. They are much, much easier. p/1/2 is THREE categories, and you will be at the BOTTOM. Like a 4 racing a 2. You can do it, but when the big boys show up it always hurts. Those Cat 2 races are gold.

So I never actually thought 4 years ago when I started racing that I would ever be anything other than your average Cat 4 racer who was out to have fun and challenge myself against others. Somehow I made it to the 3s, and as of last weekend after the Mt Hood Classic Stage race, I just bumped up to 42 points.

congratulations. i dont think you'll regret. i never had the kind of point tally you accumulated but got close enough several years that i could have submitted, and ended up not doing so until last year. i'm really glad i did, i'm a better cyclist now than i've ever been and even though i'm largely pack fodder, i'm having a blast. plus, you get to line up in the P-1-2 line at registration, so there's that.

Looking at the 1/2s from Hood is kinda misleading based on the number of pros that were there. Locally, if you look at the Monday races at PIR, the Master 1/2/3s aren't running a lot faster than the 3/4s.
