Back to the OP's question....
Hypothetical situation - a team has a guy in the break and they sit a half dozen riders on the front as a barracade so nobody can bridge up. Is this dirty pool or good tactics on their behalf? How does one best break through such a defense?

This "hypothetical" situation has been covered a fair number of times on this forum. Cliff Notes: it sucks, it's dirty pool, best defense is to barge through and bridge up to their guy knocking a couple of them into the ditch in the process. Or yell at them a lot until they stop it.

This is why you need to practice your skill at darts. If you can throw your frame pump between their spokes on a moving bike at high speed and still maintain enough control of your bike to outmaneuver the subsequent crash, you gain the title of dart grandmaster on the spot.

Someone should put that sentence on a bike sticker and send it to him.

You guys are killing me. RX speaks the truth though.
I did take it off for Lago though. It looked like I was "the guy" if it stayed together, and it was disrespectful to make the team carry the weight of my frame pump

There's nothing I hate more than an unsolicited hand on my body. I try to be courteous, and I'll generally make room for someone who verbally requests it, but the best way to make sure my ass doesn't budge one millimeter for you, is put your hand on it. Particularly in a cat5 pack full of people with less than 10 races under their belt, unexpected contact can be quite jarring to one's concentration... There's nothing safe about nudging a guy in the hip to get him out of your way.

I'm pretty quiet in the pack, but if I do need to say something I at least try to give out some sort of ID. "Hey - red jersey" or "Easy Greyhound". At then maybe the right person will pick up on it.
