Agreed, but I would think they'd jump to get there, sit on him for a second or two till he blows, and use it like a forward-operating launchpad... difference in tactic.

normal disclaimer- I'm a pursuiter, so what do I know, I'm always looking for the long sprint

On the youtube page the cameraman said something like "cramps cost me the sprint." He did see a lot of wind in the previous 20 minutes. I chatted with him a bit before and after the race, nice guy.

Plus we all decided before the race that since it was the end of the series, we should let CDR win.

Oops, did I say that out loud?

Understood, however this is where you have to know CDR. It would have taken an organized effort, like a real lead out, to catch and pass CDR. Once he jumps, if he has a gap, he's hard to beat. It looks like the field didn't have it together.

I agree with you there. Even as a sprinter I'd have viewed the cameraman as the first hopping stone then me as the second. If I was in the field I'd sprint into the shelter offered by the off-the-front me so that I could win the race.

Looking at it from the cameraman's point of view, I'd have sat on the green wheel for just a bit, to gather myself, then launch "at the right time". Figure if things were good I'd be able to jump at 1200w and hold 1100w.

Problem was that the green guy was a bit tweaked. He slowed pretty hard after his surge although it's hard to tell. I couldn't help but come up next to him and that's why I went.

So green guy is tweaked, cameraman is thinking, okay 30 feet to the guy in the front, I will crush that gap in the last 50 meters, last 6 seconds of the sprint, and that's still 10-12-14 seconds away.

So cameraman waits.

Problem is that scaredy cat me did a 900w jump after the turn, after it looked like I was done, so that's pretty close to a regular sprint/jump, which lets me increase the gap. So the next time the cameraman peeked out gap was a bit more and now it looked like whoever went first would lead out the winner, not win himself, and it'd have to be a really solid jump, for me probably a 1200-1300w jump with a sustained 1100w sprint. Anyone not feeling 1000% would hesitate there, only someone that's been holding back and just can't bear it anymore would go. So more hesitation. Plus I looked fine, it didn't look like I was just about cramping (from behind riders look like they're in a better situation than from the front), so it looked even worse for those in the field.

So then now they're done for the win and that was that. The last jump I did, the 600w jump, I didn't need to do, because I was well clear by then, but I was so tunnel visioned I didn't have the wherewithal to even look down to see if anyone was there. I assumed someone was 5 feet off my wheel the whole time and was about to pounce. Because if I was the cameraman, I'd have followed me, stayed on my wheel while the real me flailed himself, and just crushed the real me at 50m to go.

Adoption Exchange Criterium Cat 5 men/Collegiate Men. Balloon Fiesta Park, Albuquerque, NM.

Still got dropped, but felt more comfortable following wheels as the race progressed. Training hard so hopefully I will continue to improve. Was able to work with some others and stay within about a minute of the lead. This stuff is addictive!!!

elite road race in my neighbourhood. some pretty cool footage showing how nervous the peloton gets when there is the possibility for crosswinds.

EDIT: it's not me riding btw, it got linked to me.

nice work and great job for 1st in the cat 4s! I'm assuming you already know this, but just in-case: it's 10pts for your upgrade since the distance for this Circuit Race qualifies as road race points for the 4->3 upgrade (I'm sure there was more than 50 cat4s in that race as I think the total entries were 110+).

I was the rider who got 2nd overall late in that video and had some appearances throughout (white bike / black kit). You wouldn't happen to have the rear-view camera video for the last 1k? I'm just curious to see if I could've done anything else to win, but I'm assuming you didn't post it since it likely recorded the accident.

I'm glad you posted! Unfortunately I had to use my second camera to shoot the next race so I don't have rear footage. I was really impressed when I saw you coming after us, you were flying. Do you know what your speed was at the finish? Had you been able to jump sooner you probably would have taken 1st.

You might be able to see something from the end of this guys video.

Thanks, I think i actually followed the move that you, your teammate, and the guy who eventually won started (helping me to avoid the crash). There's also a video of the full 3/4 race titled "2015 Carl Dolan Memorial Spring Classic Circuit Race, Men 3/4 (full)" by Kent L. There at 58:12 you can clearly see my move as I'm right in front of him at 200m. I was pretty sheltered from the wind, but that has its disadvantages as I was boxed in and I needed an exit. I waited until a racer to my front left who popped passed back behind me and moved into the open space to my left where it was clear. I had pretty fresh legs and got up to 35mph (according to my data) and I still had more in the tank, but the finish line came up too soon.

Edit: I missed the podium shot, too, since they held it during the 1/2/3 race that I also joined in on. In-fact, 3 of the 5 guys on the cat3 podium were in the 1/2/3 race.

Wow, by the time I hit the top of the hill I was only going 30-31. You and the guy who won really blew the rest of us away.

I think there's a break and he tries to instigate the field. Note the three teammates leisurely pulling up next to him in the next bit.

Can you believe I grew up there and never saw a bike racer ever? I saw a lot of rally cross type cars - there was a track maybe a mile or two away from the house and people drove some rally cross looking Alfas around - but never, ever a racing bike.

Also I can't recall a word of Dutch. I used to be able to buy things speaking Dutch but now it's just a sexy accent to me.

Farmersville Cat4/5 Road race Gopro died during the 2nd to last lap. Field ripped up by 30+ mph wind gusts. I was putting out lots of watts, on a slight downhill, going 13mph. It hurt

I think I could've done better if I had jumped earlier in the 3/4 race. I knew the finish was near, but wasn't sure how far away it was, because I was paying more attention keeping my eyes open that entire race. also, not sure if I could've positioned myself a little better for the sprint.

can't complain about anything in the 4/5 race. I was toast, and the last lap was hella fast, like above 30 most of the time. don't think I could've done better

I think with this course setup, the finishline isn't visible until the last slight turn, which is when the sprint seems to start. But from the corner to the finish is only like 100m, so it would've been better to start the sprint about 100m prior to that last slight turn. what do you think?

Tough to tell exactly with all the water on the camera lens, but seemed like positions held pretty close from 200m to the line in the 4/5, with the exception of the guy who won. Seemed like he followed wheels till 100m to go than came around. The first race it seemed to come down to that bend at 100m. Really depends on your sprinting ability, but my thought would be look for the guy who goes up the side at 300m to go and stick to his wheel then try to come around. It does look like if you enter that bend first you have a good chance of holding on for the win

Feeling much fitter than earlier in the season but I got caught up in a crash that I knew was coming. In a perfect world, I would have noticed that the breakaways were not working sooner and then conserved myself so that I could stay near the front when the pace picked up.
