Making a kilometer blurry
Man, I just had an internal interview for a management position. Mixed emotions on this one. I love aspects of coding so much, and I don't want to completely lose touch with that. Luckily, I have a consulting gig I may be able to revive if I throw in a coding investment on my own time and hit the ball out of the park.
With my recent promotion, I've only got a few years of raises before the top of the salary band for an SE4, and there aren't many growth areas in hands-dirty engineering beyond that. They're talking about creating an SE5 role, which seems a little crazy to me, as the salaries would get pretty silly. If they don't create that position, I might eventually need to move to a different track just to keep from stagnating.
The SE5 thing is interesting. There are a lot of software engineers who entered the workforce in the 90s who have continued to build skills, and continue to add significant value. The experience needs to be utilized across the industry, so this SE5 position my just be the next evolutionary step.
Well, decisions like this are good problems to have, at any rate. I may not get the offer anyway, and won't have a decision to make.

I didn't even know what cost basis was until I looked it up (ok, so I still don't really understand it, taxes are complicated). So much paper. I suppose I'll start keeping all my tax files and stuff.
Just finished putting my Yakima Stickup rack together. Not too bad, although one piece was frustrating.

If you buy your house for $150,000, then sell for $200,000, you have a $50,000 profit. But if you spent $20,000 on remodeling improvements (new bathroom, kitchen update ...), then your actual cost (cost basis) is $170,000 ($150,000 purchase + $20,000 improvements). So now your profit is only $30,000, which reduces your taxable profit. (Regular repairs do not count, because they are not an improvement that increases the value.)
I don't remember exactly, but with a primary residence, I don't think you have to pay taxes on any real estate gains when you sell unless the gain is more than $500,000 ...... And then, if your profit goes into buying another house, you may not have to pay taxes. (all disclaimers apply to my made up numbers and "facts")

WR: Great to hear that! Good luck. Sounds like you're doing things right.
-----
This morning was intense. I went to a conference this morning that just gave me so much strength and was just awe-inspiring in the "This makes me realize how badly I want to reach my goals in life" kind of way. I heard a patient speak about his experiences dealing with his illnesses (hemophilia, HIV, and Hepatitis) and going through treatment and such. How he kept himself going and told himself he'd get through everything. Honestly, I had tears in my eyes...
I'm still processing everything that I heard. Letting it sink in. You know?

I have several pet-peeves. But this is one that I'm find really irritating as of late.
People who call me, "Boss Man," or "Boss." I was going into the market early and two workers were sitting outside smoking. Before I walked up to the door, one of them said, "Wrong door, Boss Man. They're locked. Use the other ones over there."

Tour of California is going by my house again. Looks like I'm going to have to find a pro team to race with so I can avoid getting shut out of my Saturday training ride.

Sounds good, WR. Take the management job, code on the side. If by the time the SE5 opens up and you're sick of management, transfer. /done.
I loved management and miss it a lot.

Not knowing a thing about what you do, I will offer that the next big value step is being able to proactively identify ways to make the enterprise more efficient / more money, based on your knowledge of tech and the particulars of what makes the shop run. HTH. No charge.
So, how much is a room per night? Do they come with dog heaters?

A counterpoint:
Keep your eyes open, WR. I was in a similar situation: topped out in my classification and I succumbed to management's flattery and agreed to interview for a supervisory position. I hated the job from day one and the best I could do was make it tolerable for a few years, but eventually I just had to make a choice between voluntarily demoting or leaving. I left.
All I'm saying is don't discount your enjoyment. If you love coding and you still feel challenged and are being reasonably compensated for it, give that its due weight.
