+1. I went from 225 to 180 over a couple of years by changing what I eat (from crap to good stuff) rather than trying to lose weight, while continuing to train. It gets expensive, though...I went from 38 waist slacks to 36, then to 34, and now the 34s are getting loose. I need to replace almost all my jerseys, too.

Di Luca = Ricco revived.
Flatballer, if your guy expects results while losing weight then he's probably best to try option C, but good luck with that. My advice would be to do as much tempo work as possible while watching the diet. Use the track workouts and races for intensity, but do not train for it. Keep plugging away the tempo miles with lots of rest and watch the diet. I would not set any kind of kg/wk goals. Just be happy that the numbers on the scale are going in the right direction. Once he's close to goal weight, then start the race training. Everybody wants to lose weight and win races. Some can do it, most can't.

Anyone ever had a tire unseat on Zipp 404 firecrest clinchers?
Finishing up last night's ride, and start getting a thump against the brake. Thought I'd broken a spoke because the wheel looked out of true.
Got home, and 4" or so of tire is unseated with the tube just about to blow out.
The tires are Zipps also. They mounted surprisingly easy, and were a loose fit to start.
Nothing appears wrong with the rim bead.
It had been sitting on the trainer with not much air in it prior to this ride.
My hope is that sitting on the trainer block got the tire unseated, and I didn't notice when I added air, and there's nothing wrong with the wheel.
I may change tires just for piece of mind anyway.

Understood. My problem is that I hate gyms (and meatheads). I'll need to get over that this winter if I want non-spindly legs.

Yeah, that was one of those words that rubbed me the wrong way (surveil was another) till I looked up the etymology. Oh, and till (prep) too.

I gotta knock off 10-12 of mostly muscle starting around august 8th? I leaned out from the 10 lbs I gained when I popped my collarbone, but didn't get any lighter. I'm getting dropped on any kind of hill this year, when I was on the podium of 2 of the hillier races locally last year (in the 4's, but still).
OT: I looked at the ohio racing schedule today. There may be a couple in PA I'm missing, but I count 6 more races within a 2 hour drive of home. Looks like there may be a track focus for the rest of the season.

Quick hypothetical for you guys. Let's say a racer weighs 210 lbs, and has an FTP around 210W. His main goals are track racing, crit racing, and hanging on the fast group rides, in that order. Been off the bike for about 6 months until a month ago, back to training again now. Goal weight probably around 180-190.
Should he:
a) keep training for the track and worry about the weight in the offseason
b) keep training for the track while dropping about a lb a week
c) drop 2 lbs a week while training as much as is possible on that diet
d) something else

I'm going to say that unless the rider is 15 years old time isn't a big deal. Write off this year to learning. Hit it next year.
I'm in a similar but not quite as aggressive position. I'm in the low-mid 170s and I'd like to be 160. I'm already thinking 2014 and not worried about results and such this year. If this summer goes well and I'm close to 160 towards the end of the summer then I'll see if I can get down to 155 or lower for 2014.d

I'm 37 years old. I've already been busted for doping, so no great legacy to save. I'm old enough that I am having a tough time riding against these kids and day to day recovery is suffering. I've got 2 racing days in my legs this year.
So:
If I ride poorly (what will happen in his situation riding clean), I'll never get another contract...career over.
If I dope and get caught, I'll never get another contract...career over.
If I dope, ride well and somehow sneak through the system, I might possibly get another contract.
Call it sad if you want, but it was really a strangely logical decision on his part.

i know everyone hates average speed talk, but if there's a better way to describe the pace of a ride i'm all ears, not that the pace of the ride has much meaning in a training or racing context other than as a comparative measure on the same course corrected for environmental conditions that could affect the same.

Starting.. So far I've only raced on the track in a non-serious summer series last year. No cats just 3 groups A B C. Been riding fixed/ss 4 years. Always wanted to try road racing just didn't have a road bike until a month ago.
