Trying to decide what to do about about my pocket digital camera. I have a Canon S90, which I like a lot. Great combination of image quality, manual controls, raw capture, small size, and decent price point.

I lost the battery and charger. $100 to gt new ones from Canon. You can get off brands much cheaper, but I haven't had good success with those in the past.

The S110 is the current version of the camera for $349. The S120 has been announced and will be available shortly. Only apparent difference is the S120 will hav the new Digic 6 processor, instead of the Digic 5. This appears to allow faster autofocus, but doesn't improve image quality. It will also be $100 more expensive.

I have a Canon D5 SLR if I need a more capable camera. So I'm leaning toward getting the S110 now, and saving the $100.

+1

I think the story was that an official went into the middle of the road to pick up something (during the race) and was struck by the cyclist.

Story I read said the official tried to toss a walkie talkie into the lead car; missed; stepped into the road to retrieve the walkie talkie, and was hit.

That's horrible. Was this from the video we all saw with the bad course routing? I didn't know he was still in the hospital from that. RIP.

Doesn't sound like the same one.

it is the same one;

Fair Haven resident Frank Scalzo tells redbankgreen the accident occurred directly in front of where he was standing as a spectator just as the pace car was leading riders to the end of the first lap in front of the borough firehouse on River Road.
Scalzo said the race official ran into the road and attempted to toss a walkie-talkie into the pace car but missed, and when he tried to retrieve the device, “he got nailed by one of the racers.”
The rider fell face-first into the pavement, and the official was sent flying into nearby grass, Scalzo said. Both appeared to be unconscious, he said.

No. That race was earlier in the year in VA

Sad news about Cole Porter. One of my work colleagues is close friends. This sport is stupid.

do the charger and battery from the s100 work for your s90? i think it's an nb-5l battery. if so (and assuming you actually want to keep your camera), i may be able to help you out. i've had to make a somewhat forced upgrade, so i'll have an s120 on hand tomorrow to compare to the rx100 & rx100m2.

the rx100 series is marginally larger based on specs but feels noticeably larger than the canons in hand, which may or may not be material for you.

Don't believe so. S90 uses the nb-6l. Rediculous how they change the battery slightly. Over the years I've got a collection of slightly different sized, orphaned Canon chargers as I've upgraded, replaced cameras.

Like to hear how you like the S120.

The RX100 looks great. I like the smaller size, and cheaper price of the Canon. Also having always used Canon cameras, the controls on the Canon are intuitive, so I tend to stick with Canon.

weird--the 120 appears to use the nb-6l (from a cursory search). keeping your chargers may pay off in the future!

i've heard the IQ of the rx100 & rx100m2 is improved, though i haven't been able to test it yet. IQ matters to me.

i wanted to have all the cameras in-hand as the form factor is also an issue. my initial impression is that the rx100 may be just a bit bigger than i want for this application. don't like the pop-up flash (that it must be pushed down to retract) and not a fan of the articulating screen (heavier/bigger) on the m2. i don't need the hotshoe adapter, which takes up a bit more space. maybe the IQ will make me willing to overlook this.
