omnium scoring for a stage race is idiotic. all the more sprinter types already get their chance to snatch up things in one-day races, no need to ruin it for everyone else

The everyone else (the imaginary guys not showing) are the reason these things are being canceled. An omnium saved this from being a one day RR. Now there are three day of racing instead of the one that was there 10 days ago. You're Don Quixote tilting at windmills

I know you guys don't go into the 41, so I have a question.

Do you guys get numbness in your toes (not while riding, but afterwards)? I've had it since a few hours after my Saturday morning race. Was thinking of putting some gel inserts in - could my soles be too stiff? I figured it would go away by now, and I doubt I got nerve damage from riding my bike for an hour, albeit at a very hard effort.

stuff like that could have a variety of causes. sole stiffness not seeming a very likely one. the stiff one is stiff. no cycling shoes should be particularly flexible. more probably a less than ideal cleat placement.

If you have toe/forward instep straps/buckles/etc you may be tightening them too much. For me the front (toe) has to be basically loose, like it seems like it's doing nothing, else my toes are numb for a while.

Just guessing but tightening the instep may help, to keep your heel planted in the heel cup (and not letting your foot slide forward). This helps me with proper shoe fit.

The shape of the insole can make a difference. I've had numbness issues after using a Specialized shoe insert that was designed with the arch further back on my foot than matches my anatomy. Another fitter put me in some with a (comparatively) more forward arch support and the issue went away instantly.

Bike store down the street from me said they would change cleat position for free and see if that helps. They said since I have flat feet (collapsed arch) I would need arch support, and need something cycling specific. Of course it's $90 in their store for their insole. I was thinking of just trying a dr scholls insert I have lying around or just a metatarsel gel insert. But maybe adjusting cleat position would put pressure farther back.

It's just odd that this is the first time this has happened. I have Shimano R133 shoes and Shimano 105 pedals. Perhaps riding MORE could alleviate the problem as I get used to putting pressure on this part of my feet.

I find if my cleat position is a little forward or back of ideal I have different issues arise. E-soles make a really good, adjustable, insole.

I have flat feet too, grew up with all sorts of orthotics and stuff. Now I don't use anything, just whatever insole comes with the shoe. Sidis are good to me. Shimano not good, at least when I last tried them. Not sure of any other brands but the Giro and I forget the other shoe I tried but both seem to fit like a Giro. The other shoe came out at the same time Giro came out with shoes. Wow my memory is bad.

Keep in mind he could still change his mind 10 more times and the event could end up being a unicycle derby or something by the time the date actually comes around.

I have wide feet and bunions (which just means weird shaped feet, more or less). I get numb toes unless the toe box area of the shoes is so roomy that I can wiggle my toes in there, like really loose. The only shoes I've found that have enough room are Bontragers. Even the Specialized wide sizes aren't wide enough.

Looks like awful weather for the weekend in Cape Cod. 50's and rain. Still tempted to bring my bike, though first I need to buy a rear rack, maybe today. I assume leaving the bike on the car for a 4 or 5 hour drive in the rain is fine, right? Should I bother covering up the cogs at all? Maybe a good rinsing would be a good thing. The gears always seem to be filthy.

I understand the logic behind Omniums. They make good sense for being an organizer. However, being a person that enjoys tends to do well in Stage Races, it really blows!! Because if you do all the events, by the end you are getting cooked by people that didn't. Especially with the omniums that have two events in one day. Almost all the races in the SE are omniums. It's lame.

i prefer stage races to omniums as well, by a large margin, but i guess if it is the difference between an even for no event it is worthwhile.

If that's your thing there's a unicycle group at the whiteface hill climb.

since I don't have a TT bike, and I don't see one in the near future (new nearby velodrome dictates next bike purchase), I'll play in an omnium but not a stage race. Unless the obligatory TT is a Merckx TT, then I'd join in, but that would piss off the other half of y'all.

Btw usac results (on their site) appear to be broken today.

On the plus side, maybe it means they're upgrading something like adding upgrade points or something. Probably not though.

Omniums are a waste of time. Call it a "mini series" and be done. Leave omniums on the track where they have races that actually require thinking on the fly vs. "me sit in, me sit in, me sit in"

Stage races are often won or lost on epic gambles. Who heads off solo 3 miles into a 90 mile road race knowing they might pick up 3 points on the leader? Pull off and go to a poetry reading for an hour in an omnium and you still can win.

"Sport" to support a souless economic justification is called WWF. Or NCAA.

I've won omniums, and I've won stage races. I'd rather lose a stage race than win an omnium.

Omniums are anti-American. You think Patton would like omniums? McArthur? Would Lincoln have decided the Civil War on a points basis? Hell no. Sherman didn't tear down a couple of Confederate flags in Atlanta. He burned that sombeech to the ground like LeMond torching Frenchy Larry.

You know who LOVES omniums? The Taliban. You pick a side. I know which side I'm on and it bleeds red, white, and blue.

Screw you omnium sympathizers. Go join the math club. I'll be sticking a rusty screw driver into someone's spleen and watching their facial expression as they realize they are bleeding out.

That's racing. Omnium...just a fancy Latin word for Hello Kitty.
