at my kid's (age 5) soccer practices, there is a big push to always have them in game situations. there is one game a week but the 2 practices feature scrimmages for at least 1/2 the time. there's really no teaching of skills. it happens that my kid -- for this moment, probably fleeting - is a little bigger/faster/more confident so he has the ball during these games, but the majority of kids don't even touch the ball.
every time i'm there i think about how -- especially for those kids -- most would be far better served by dribbling for an hour with their own ball. kids show up for an hour and get 30 seconds of time with the ball. ridiculous.
OTOH, most parents aren't even paying attention (social hour) and they just want their kid occupied.
these parents are amazed when my kid can dribble the ball. it's only because we actually practice these skills on our own, outside of the league. i'm amazed these parents expect their kids to learn anything from volunteer coaches, some of whom literally have no soccer experience. (seriously--i've talked to a few that had never even played in their life. nice to volunteer, but....)

Our town has British coaches/trainers ( U.K. International Soccer Camps Inc.) (parent assistants) and we spent most of the practice doing drills. Each kid had their own ball (to keep), passing, dribbling around cones, 2-on-2, 3-on-3 drills, then a short scrimmage at the end for fun.
To keep the scrimmage going quickly, coaches and assistants would have a couple extra balls. As soon as it got kicked out of bounds , we would throw in a new ball for them to use, while we ran off to get the previous one.

was probably just a 1st day thing...maybe.
i take him to his normal practices and games, but we always play/do drills before and after. most of the other parents i see locally sit and talk while their kids run amok.
on a side note, one kid's father ruptured his achilles in a fathers-vs-sons game. that was surely painful and embarrassing.

Don't be so sure. The English give a ****, in a big way, and as a result their league generates huge money and attracts a lot of the world's best players. So most of up-and-coming English players don't get to play for the top teams and don't develop. And the England national team is poorer than it should be.

I do think this WC was a bit harsh for them, they played well against Italy and Uruguay, just a few lapses cost them.

funny you mention that...just this morning my kid got home from his first day of soccer camp, same british soccer thing, i believe. asked him what he did. he told me they played tag. yep, tag.
was probably just a 1st day thing...maybe.

IMO, England's biggest problem is the Premier League has become international. There's no patience to develop home grown talent, and a lot of foreigners are taking away academy slots. Most of the big clubs aren't owned by the English, so there's no real passion in building a star from the city. It still happens, but not like it did in the past.

I'm happy to see him back racing again this year and last year. He's got a collegiate national championship under his belt, a handful of p/1/2 wins, and can still dish it out. He's a great guy, and I'm happy they're making money on the Driveway. I still take some advice I read from you long ago to not preregister and pay the higher entry fee to pass more along to the promoter -- I figure it's an extra $5 to me, but probably $8 to him and Holly after BikeReg fees. Of course it takes me out of the weekly drawing for prizes :-/

I'm extremely OCD about things - my closet is organized by type of clothing then color, and it's not uncommon for me to turn around while still in the neighborhood and drive home to double, or triple, check that i locked the doors.
But I recently swapped stems and now my bar and stem don't match. It's kind of driving me nuts. I changed stems because I went with a longer one and because I cracked two face plates on the brand I had - and so have several other people I have since learned.
Now I am debating whether to buy a different handlebar just to match the stem. The shape, reach and drop are nearly identical. The only difference is the logos. It's a silly issue, I know, but it just eats at me.

Knock knock ... thought I would check in.
The girls and I still live together. Oldest is studying to be an RN. Making a 3.8 so far. Youngest is an honor student in high school. Received 2 awards for highest grades.
I'm still happy as a lark (whatever the heck that means).
Working, running a home, staying fit, dating, having a great life. No complaints at all.

Glad to hear things are going well subby. I've wondered how you were doing from time to time.

That argument gets brought out alot, but thats too simple an answer or at least not the only thing going on. As a counter point...The Ticos - Costa Rica do not have a single EPL player on their squad (they do have some EPL guys that got loaned out). You watch them (as well as some other teams) and they play like their hair is on fire. The English team, you get a sense like they're trying not to F it up. Passion/attitude is just also a small part of it...but its part of it for sure. although england may very well beat costa rica to salvage some pride today.
One very good thing about them getting knocked out, from a UK resident's perspective, is that we will now be spared the usual hysterical hype in the English tabloid newspapers.
