You can get stuff that's just stevia sweetened, but to be honest, I wonder about that as well. If a plant is sweet and doesn't have any calories, I wonder what selective advantage it has. You have to know that it wants something in return.

agreed, i figure it's just a matter of time before we realize stevia is connected with cancer or something. there are no free passes in life.

I recently started taking a Optimum Opti-Man multivitamin. Holy hell these pills are large, and the bottle says to take 3 pills a day. Is this really necessary for a simply vitamin? Am I losing that much advantage of the MV if I only took 1 a day?

Shoot, you fools are over thinking this stuff so much. I joke about my diet, but when it comes time to really lose weight here's my general plan:
wake up and eat a breakfast that leaves you just barely satisfied
go to lunch and just eat enough to not be starving
eat a light dinner.
drink lots of water.
I don't think we need to worry about breaking down % of **** and all that crap. Weight loss is pretty simple. high fat diet, low carb, high carb, blah blah blah. Just eat foods that don't completely suck if you want to be healthy, or eat fatty foods and be 3 lbs heavier.

if you're constantly hungry you're either a) not eating enough or b) eating the wrong stuff. and yes, the proportions of what you're eating DO matter and saying "eat foods that don't completely suck," is useless as people's definition of what this means can differ and are backed by varying degrees of reputable evidence. the way you eat may "work" for you now in the sense that you don't get fat, but as you age this isn't always going to be the case (I look back on how I/my friends ate in high school and am disgusted and i'm only a few years older than you).
honestly, you're comment that you should "eat fatty foods" to gain weight is a great indicator of how little you know.

if you're trying to lose weight you ahve to eat less. Most likly you'll be a bit hungry
i said eat fatty foods and you will be a bit heavier than if you eat healthier foods and eat less of it, not to eat fatty foods to gain weight.
Idk, but its a pretty easy equations of calories in - exercise. But then again i'm just a fatty from ohio who rides his bike in circles.

in addition to what I said earlier, this stuff is just kind of interesting. i think the motivation for this thread was more in the vein of geeking out about nutritional stuff versus discussing the lowest common denominator dietary choices. maybe it appeals to my love for bio, but i find a lot of nutritional research really interesting.
and calories in - calories out is NOT an accurate rule of them (probably one of the worst dietary myths in the us, along with the fats are bad myth that you also seem to believe). all calories are not created equal.

I do find it harder to diet and train at the same time. Dropping a pound a week has to be strictly regimented, and you can't do that when riding 200 miles a week. I am still dropping weight, but not at the same clip. I'm just hoping to be 150ish by March.

You talk about 'fatty' foods and 'healthy' foods. By who's definition? Sometimes those two are the same. Sometimes it's pretty easy to get into a fight as to which is which.
What I know is this. I seem to do better eating foods that have the least processing. Since (for the most part) dropping grains I find it difficult to get adequate carbs for cycling without taking on a fairly high fructose load (which I try to avoid).

There's a pretty big hormonal component of this whole thing that you're just not old enough to appreciate. Right now, in a dietary sense, you can get away with murder. Yes, the calories equation exists, no question, but that certainly doesn't answer the question of what is the best diet for putting it all together. It's damned tough to lose weight, gain strength, gain cardio fitness and not drive yourself into the ground. If it's not, then wait 10 or 20 years...it will be.

I'm 29 and can still eat anything and everything and not lose or gain more than a pound ever. I know that even in my early 20s I could put whatever in all the time or hardly ever and it made zero noticible difference in anything I did. But, over the last couple years I have been increasingly careful, knowing one day it won't be so anymore. Also, I want every training advantage I can get. I recently realized I don't eat NEAR enough fat. I still can't quite figure out how to get enough fat into my diet. I tried snacking on nuts at work, buying 2% milk (yes I still drink cow milk), putting extra olive oil or butter or mayo on things. I am starting to try to get into peanut butter but it's hard. Salmon is fatty but too much of a pain to eat all the time!

Studies show that increased protein intake during weight loss helps prevent loss of muscle mass. It also tends to satiate better than the other macro nutrients, calorie for calorie.

Here's a practical example.
If you view yourself as an F1 racecar would you pull into a Citgo and put 87 octane gas into it?
Sure it will run and probably make a little power but will it run at it's optimal level? No.
