PC8 on order.

It looks like Specialized recently lowered its prices. The S-Works shoes are now $360, down from, I think, $400 a few weeks ago. And I just bought my wife a new helmet - to replace the one she cracked in a crash about six weeks ago. When I looked up prices right after the crash, the Propero she wanted was $125. When I went to buy it last week, it was $110.

I've gotten two rides in with mine. I like it. I haven't spent a lot of time trying to configure screens yet, but the screen is very easy to read. I feel like all four numbers are each the same size as when I only had one number on my Garmin 500.

The GPS also seems to work fine for me. I know there have been reports of it being inaccurate, but it clearly tracked all the roads I rode on, and when I zoomed in, I could even see where I pulled off the road a bit for a quick pit stop yesterday.

My only complaints so far are that it seems like the battery drains pretty quickly - Teton offered a couple suggestions to fix it, so we will see how that goes - and the handlebar clip could be a little more elegant in its design.

I should have it in a day or two.

Want my wahoo fitness stuff (RFKLT head unit and bluetooth speed/cadence sensor)? I'm waffling between changing my new powertap to bluetooth or getting an ant+ headunit

thanks for the offer, but part of the reason I want it is for the mapping capabilities when traveling.

don't think they lowered them, per se--they launched the new ones @ $400, so technically the "old ones" (which are obviously no longer any good) are $360.

that mount is basic but holds the device in the spot that a whole bunch of companies have been trying to emulate with the garmin! :)

seriously, though, it survives MTB use and have been through multiple crashes for me--about all i can ask for.

initial GPS reports had people extrapolating from a german magazine's pre-production review. could vary regionally. i recommend adding "GPS accuracy" to a screen and watching it for a few rides. mine's generally at 1.6-2.1m.

having played with 510, 810 and 1000 for so long now... I'm finding it hard initially to setup my screens on the 520.. Keep touching the screen :)... so far I like it though. Compact and light and very clear screen... might not use it till the weekend though. Making some changes on the road bike and will not be ready to late in the week.

can't believe they still don't have the ability to set up screens via computer yet...or do they? they're long overdue. doesn't happen frequently, but it's such a pain.

(OTOH...at least you can change it without a computer when the need arises.)

^ that would be nice to drag and drop boxes into setup screens... dreaming...

dream big! :)

(seriously, though, while this is a great thing, one cannot change fields without a PC on the PC8. would be nice to have both options.)

Good thing I'm transitioning to cyclocross mode. My current shoes are still good for a few months of training :).

Specialized isn't really known for lowering prices. Heck, most of the stuff on their public Outlet page is listed at full retail.

It's definitely functional. I am not debating that. But when I opened the box, I saw a fancy red computer. Then I clamp on to the front of my bike, and all I really notice is how the little piece of cheap plastic holds it on and covers the little SRM logo. It was a major let down. It probably seems fine on the black one, as the colors mesh, but the jarring transition from cheap black plastic to fancy red computer was a bit of a let down.

Again, this has nothing to do with performance or capabilities, I just wish the clamp had a more elegant design. I wonder why K-Edge hasn't created one yet? Their TT bar option looks fairly elegant.

agreed. it was surprising. in a way, it's like the old "s-works road shoe" became the "pro". of maybe like the 2014 s-works bike becomes the 2015 pro.

they basically maintained the top tier pricing (now the "s-works 6").

you'd expect them to have added 10% to the cost, but they didn't. i think that is kind of cool if we are objective about it.

fair points. here's my take.

1-that style mount just plain works....for like 10 years since they introduced it. goes back longer than my history. the main thing they changed is just the width of the attachment to the bars to make it more compatible, and the diameter as people moved to 31.8.

2-that composite mount is as light as it gets. pretty much anything else would be heavier (even a trivial amount).

3-if the worst were to happen, the mount would break before the computer or the bars. that's a good thing. not even sure how this can happen, esp on a road bike where the shifters would take the hit first--or even on an MTB where the computer hangs off the front the wheel still protects against a direct blow. with a beefier mount, the computer or bar could be at risk.

4-you're right about the logo being covered up! i actually didn't notice that little logo there! the PC7 did NOT have this logo. SRM never care too much about marketing. in fact, i have an aluminum PC7 sitting on my desk that has NO mention of SRM other than on the small serial # sticker on the back. none. nothing. not even on the front.

5-that little tab that you mention that covers the logo was an addition to the mount in the past year or 2. can't remember when they started doing it. i consider it a nuisance (funny--over the weekend a guy i sent a PC8 to called me to complain about the new mounts and how he hates that tab). i told him to break it off. i use old mounts and have never had the computer fall off, even after MTBing, dumping a bike, hitting a car, etc.

6-the point about matching....i get it. OTOH, if you had a red mount you'd have someone complain that they are upset that the mount doesn't match the bars. i guess they've left a business opportunity open. if you think this is an un-served or under-served market, you could make up some mounts in various matching colors! ;-)

it's german. did you expect form over function?

i'm just playing a bit here, and you raise some good stuff. knowing what i know about the company, i don't think that it was given much thought. i could be wrong. after all, the SRM head units are pretty distinctive, and i guess that they created the ability to spot an SRM from a heli shot of the TdF speaks more than their little logo being covered by the tab.

have you gotten any comments on the size of the PC8? a number of people have remarked on how HUGE it is. i just noticed this--happen to have a Garmin 800 right here. the 800 is actually BIGGER than the PC8. never realized that until laying it on top of the PC8. i think it is because the display is so crisp that it seems larger. i told people who made this comment on a ride in july that i could get a live feed of the TdF on this little TV screen. one day, perhaps!

i probably could have just left the post at that.

just because i was curious and had everything sitting here on my desk, here are a couple photos so everyone can see the context.

this is a PC7 (left) vs PC8. the logo on the bottom right is the one topflightpro is talking about.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=469138

here's how much of that logo gets covered up by the mount. that little tab is a new thing on the mount--one can break it off with no adverse effect.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=469137

on the PC8, they added branding to the front, and we often get head-on shots of bikes. (to be fair, some PC7s had mention of SRM on the front, but not all.)
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=469136

and here is the garmin 8x0, overlaying the 8.

makes you feel good about spending more $$ than you have? :D makes you realize that after buying a PC8 and SRM power meter that you might have to live like a (domestic) pro for a while? (see phil gaimon, "pro cycling on $10 a day") :D

a friend recently got the pc8. he loves his but it did take a bit to get used to the button combos. when i went to the pc7 from garmin, those button combos made little to no sense. however, i was glad to see those weird combos carried over to the 8! :)

that said, the 8 is more accessible in that everything can now be done from menus, so functions of individual buttons or combos don't have to be remembers.

topflightpro 08-04-15 01:32 PM

No one's commented on the screen size yet, other than one guy saying it was nice to be able to look over and get a sense of the effort we were putting out during one part of the ride. He doesn't have a PM, and he figured his wattage had to be similar to mine.

But I love how big it is. So easy to read things.

And yes, the clamp is incredibly light, and another design would probably be heavier. I may break that little tab off - it was not easy to remove the computer with that tab in place. Again, these are minor complaints.

shovelhd 08-04-15 04:26 PM

Anticipated September delivery. This is SRM we are talking about so before Christmas would be great.

dz_nuzz 08-05-15 03:55 AM

Is the Edge 520 actually out in the WIld? All the online resources I see seem to indicate that it will be another month but I have heard people talking about it like it is here.

I might have to call the LBS I preordered it from.
