Making a kilometer blurry
So some iteration of my wife's family have been here since last Wednesday. Mostly its been my mom-in-law and my 7 almost 8 year old niece. Wife had early appointments so I was on duty. MIL started in on breakfast for my niece...chocolate milk and Wonderbread toast with jelly. I got some fresh fruit in her before the bread but couldn't undo the chocolate milk.
Lets just say my MIL isn't healthy or athletic.

Both of my kids' grandmas live nearby. One is well trained to only feed the kids actual food. The other is untrainable. Butter and sugar sandwiches for lunch, etc. She still thinks the phrase "organic food" is like some kind of scam. "What food isn't organic? Rocks?"

Been going through a lot of this lately with my kid. "Snap out of it" or really any advice while the anxiety attack is happening is counterproductive. What has helped more is bringing a breezy and confident "time to take control of this situation" attitude when the anxiety is more subdued, and not offering any opportunity for him to opt out of positive action and back into self-pity.
"Hey buddy, we're using the crutches and having breakfast at the table with everyone else, let's go," instead of "do you feel like trying the crutches today?"

In high school my mom was very good with me when episodes like that. She'd have me isolate tasks and focus on just one task at a time. She impressed on me the "you just have to do it" way of thinking but that it all starts with one task. Task triage, do what you need to do, less effort on the deluxe/unnecessary stuff.
Of course this was my own thing. Not sure if it would help either of you in your situations. I know at some point I'll probably have to deal with this stuff regarding Junior.

So just got off the phone with the New Britain P&R director. Ends up he used to promote the New Britain Spring Training Series in the 80s. Although he told me of some of the city's concerns with traffic etc, he obviously has a sympathetic ear for a race promoter. Nothing even close to official yet but the dialog has started.

Sigh. Got the stuff from Comp Cyclist for my new bike. It was basically a box full of parts. I was unaware if I selected a complete bike but didn't want the wheels that they would not put it together. So now I gotta figure out if I want to mess with the internal routing or just have someone do it, which adds costs to my build. In addition, they sent the wrong size stem and the wrong cassette. I'm also still waiting on brake pads and pedals that are back ordered from them. What a mess.
In addition, my IT band is still the suck. Which is awesome. PT is helping though, but ugh I really screwed up coming back too fast.

New ride...
2012 Tarmac Elite frame built up with Force 22. Moved my existing Psimet wheels(w/ Ptap) & old pedals. Weighs in at just a shade over 17 lbs. A good 2 lbs lighter than my old bike. Now if I could lose a good 10-15 lbs and increase my FTP we might have something .
Bought the frame from a friend for $400. Got a good deal on the Force 22. Still, wasn't a cheap build. Luckily about $1k (about half) of it was covered between a fitness subsidy at work and a nice little extra American Express reward card I got from kicking ass at work. I meant to build it myself (which would have saved me $120) but I wasn't getting to it and I kind of wanted to ride it rather than look at a pile of parts in the garage. Can't wait to ride it tomorrow morning...

Making a kilometer blurry
I brought dinner to a cycling friend last night. His daughter (R) is recovering from an auto accident. She was stopped at the line/light for a left turn across a highway. Some jackass in an SUV came up the turn lane at 70mph, hit a Nissan Murano traveling to the right, then plowed into R's Civic (over median and through landscaping), then tumbled a few times, hitting three more cars, sending 9 people to the hospital. R was pretty shattered - three weeks in the hospital, starting in ICU. Just graduated H.S., will have to put college on hold for as much as a year. After being home for three weeks, she had to be admitted again b/c of infection. Back home now, but damn.
Family is buying both kids large (used) SUVs with modern restraint systems. Hard not to see their point. What a nightmare. I'm glad she's doing as well as she is though.
Infection is a PITA. Hope you kick it soon. One of my lapro sites got infected after my surgery. Pretty minor, but it was inside my belly button. One day I got sick of it and started pulling tissue out with tweezers, and ended up with a big chunk of suture that should have been absorbed. Felt better immediately, and the infection was gone the next day. I guess it was more of an irritation than an infection.

I had tendon transplant surgery and was sceduled for 6 weeks in the sling. On a hot day I reclined on the floor to take a nap and unfastened the part holding my forearm so I could straighten the elbow. The phone rang once I was asleep so I put both arms out to lift myself up and pulled the screw loose in my shoulder, yeooowwch. Doc made me keep the sling on for 2 extra weeks.
Driving 90 miles to visit my brother on a bouncy fwy with my super stiff truck, I felt something wet on my shirt. The bouncing had pulled the sutures loose and the incision was bleeding. I took off the sling and tied it around my pec and finished the trip.

I did mention Jens Voigt to her - re: "shut up legs". I don't think she quite got it though.

Best to your friend, WR. That's a terrible situation.
