my daughter's neighborhood friend started riding a new bike last week. my daughter has had a 12" bike since she was 3 (currently 7) but showed no real interest in it, she and the neighborhood friend preferred scooters, so the training wheels were still on it, and despite it being way too small for her, I wasnt going to replace it until she showed some interest in riding it.
yesterday, she asked me to take the training wheels off, so I did. knowing she is a scooter whiz, I had her use the bike like a scooter, put a foot on a pedal, hands on the bars, use the opposite foot to push along, and when you feel your balance, roll, sit, and when comfortable, pedal.
while I was trying to de-part an old frame, she was working on the bike in the driveway, and about 15 minutes later, she was pedaling by saying "look at me daddy!" an hour after that we were riding around the neighborhood!
now, she has earned a new bike.

Bummer, kid. Then again, you were about the only remaining un-crashed member of the 33, so maybe it was jsut your time. Heal quickly and well!

Hahaha, i like all the jsut jokes. My season is basically over anyways (i had two more races on my schedule, but i have to miss one), and i'm moving to D.C. very soon, so it's not too terrible. It could have been a billion times worse if there was a car behind me. Also pictures are on bookface if anyone wants to see.

So some iteration of my wife's family have been here since last Wednesday. Mostly its been my mom-in-law and my 7 almost 8 year old niece. Wife had early appointments so I was on duty. MIL started in on breakfast for my niece...chocolate milk and Wonderbread toast with jelly. I got some fresh fruit in her before the bread but couldn't undo the chocolate milk.
Lets just say my MIL isn't healthy or athletic.

If a person is suffering emotional distress: anxiety, stress, panic, such that it affects them physically and impairs them, would it be helpful to tell them to "snap out of it" ? I'm thinking not.
What if another person wants to try out for a sports team, is obviously talented, and would likely do well (high scorer on 2 previous teams). But they are convinced everyone else is better, whine day after day about not being good enough, so why bother ?
ok, done venting

Been going through a lot of this lately with my kid. "Snap out of it" or really any advice while the anxiety attack is happening is counterproductive. What has helped more is bringing a breezy and confident "time to take control of this situation" attitude when the anxiety is more subdued, and not offering any opportunity for him to opt out of positive action and back into self-pity.
"Hey buddy, we're using the crutches and having breakfast at the table with everyone else, let's go," instead of "do you feel like trying the crutches today?" But again, this only works if there's not an anxiety attack in progress. When there is a spiral of despair happening, all we can really do is sit and keep him company until the episode exhausts itself, and him.
No idea if this is relevant to your specific situation, but it's certainly been at the top of my mind lately.
